Armed with a turnip and watering can, David was in high spirits as he got stuck into scenes dressed in his character's white shirt, tie and dark brown slacks.

David combed his grey locks to the back of his head as he donned a long tan coloured coat for filming.

The Only Fools And Horses actor was animated, practicising his lines between scenes while holding up an array of comical props.

David - whose character inherits the famous shop Arkwright's in the show's original revival - made full use of his time in-between takes and concentrated on his script.

The BBC confirmed this week that the most loved convenience store on TV will once again open its doors to viewers this Christmas.

The spin-off, written by Roy Clarke, has proven a huge hit since its 2014 comeback, being becoming the highest rated comedy series over the last year.

With Open All Hours first revived on Boxing Day 2013, the original Christmas special was the most-watched show of that day, returning to screens after almost 30 years.

Many viewers felt that the show's revival was a fitting tribute to the late star of the series - Ronnie Barker - who died of heart failure in 2005 aged 76.

On returning to one of his most famous roles, David said: 'I can't wait for viewers to see the scrapes Granville gets into this series, almost as much as I can't wait to start filming them.'

The comedy's producer Gareth Edwards added: 'I continue to be bowled over by the incredible audience response to Still Open All Hours, so it's a real pleasure to welcome the series back to BBC One.'
