The world's most awkward handshake: Iranian minister under fire for touching a German man... who is actually a woman (and SHE’S condemned for associating with a terrorist)

  • Iranian minister Massoumeh Ebtekar was in Berlin for environment talks
  • She shook hands with German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks
  • But many in Iran criticised her after assuming handshake was with a man
  • Hendricks also came under fire in Germany for associating with a 'terrorist'

An Iranian minister has come under fire for shaking the hand of a German man who was actually a woman - and she has now been condemned for associating with a terrorist.

Massoumeh Ebtekar, Iran's controversial vice president, was at a meeting of environmental officials in Berlin to discuss an 'action plan' on water, air and biodiversity.

After talks with a suited German politician with short hair, many in Iran wrongly assumed Ebtekar had broken rules for observant Muslim women by shaking a male stranger's hand.

But it was soon pointed out that Ebtekar, who once boasted she would be happy to kill US hostages, had actually met with female German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks.

While Ebtekar faced angry calls to quit in her homeland, Ms Hendricks also came under fire for meeting an individual German media have described as the 'God-mother of terror'.

Ebtekar is known for being the public face of those who held 52 Americans hostage at the US embassy in Iran in 1979.

She often appeared in front of international media as a translator for those carrying out the occupation and insisted she would be ready to pick up a gun and kill a hostage herself.

According to McClatchy DC, German MP Thomas Feist criticised Ms Hendricks for associating with Ebtekar.

Mr Feist, a member of the Christian Democrats that are part of Germany's ruling coalition, said: 'Ms Ebtekar does not stand for a changing Iran. We should be more careful in picking political partners.'

German newspaper Bild Zeitung ran a headline about how the 'God-mother of terror' had been a 'guest in Berlin' and asked why the government was 'wining and dining a terrorist'.
