A koala and a butterfly struck up an unlikely but adorable friendship in their wildlife park near Sydney.

Willow the koala was in the background while Symbio Wildlife Park was filming the monarch butterfly on a flower, but the inquisitive joey came running over and nuzzled up to it.

The video shows Willow nuzzling her nose against her new best friend while it is on the flower, before it flies onto her nose and remains perched there or on her forehead.

'Before we knew it, it actually flew onto Willow's head and then stayed there for ages,' marketing manager Kevin Fallon told the ABC.

'We just never thought in a million years that would happen and Willow's reaction would be so priceless.'

Mr Fallon said Willow was one of seven koalas living at Symbio in Helensburgh, about 45 kilometres south of Sydney.

She was born at the park almost a year ago and Mr Fallon said said was a bit more affectionate and independent than other koalas.

'But she's an absolutely adorable little girl and just loves people,' he said.
