Emotional vigil is held for two officers killed by gang member in Palm Springs

Mourners are holding a vigil outside police headquarters in Palm Springs, California for two officers who were shot dead by a gang member Saturday.

Mourners laid bouquets, wrote messages and lit candles Sunday to honor Jose Gilbert Vega, known as Gil, and Lesley Zerebny, 27. 

They were shot dead when they attended a home after reports of a family dispute.

A third officer was wounded and 26-year-old John Felix was detained after a lengthy standoff. 

He will be charged with murder Tuesday with murder and could face the death penalty.

The incident was mentioned briefly by Republican nominee Donald Trump during last night's second presidential debate.

He said: 'Just today, policemen were shot, two killed, and this is happening on a weekly basis.' 

Palm Springs, 100 miles east of Los Angeles, is a largely affluent city famous for its hot spas and health resorts but it has a growing gang culture.

Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said the injured officer was not in a life-threatening condition and had been able to tell investigating detectives what had happened.

Officer Vega, a 35-year veteran with the Palm Springs Police Department, and his partner, who had been on the force less than two years, were killed when a man puled a gun on them as they investigated a 911 call to a domestic dispute.

Felix was arrested after a 12-hour standoff.

Chief Deputy Ray Wood said Felix, who was unarmed but had several magazines of ammunition on his body, tried to escape through the back door after police fired a chemical agent into the house.

He was eventually subdued after police shot him with non-lethal rounds.

The Desert Sun newspaper said was arrested by force three years ago at the same house where Saturday's shootings occurred.

He was also charged with attempted murder in a 2009 shooting, which was pleaded down to assault with a firearm. He admitted a gang affiliation at the time.

A neighbor, Frances Serrano, said she spoke to Felix's father before Saturday's shooting, and he said his son had a gun and wanted to shoot police officers.
