Sarah Palin says she's heard 'much worse' in locker rooms than Trump's lewd remarks and goes on to call his debate performance a 'slam dunk'

Sarah Palin has backed Donald Trump, saying she had overheard 'much worse' in 'locker rooms' during her time as a sports reporter.

The former Alaska governor played down the video tape which emerged at the weekend on which Trump was heard bragging about sexual conquests and said he was entitled as a rich and famous man to grope women he found attractive.

Palin, who was the Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008, posted on Facebook: 'As a former sports reporter, I've heard much worse in locker rooms.'

She worked as a sportscaster in Alaska between 1985 and 1988.

In a long diatribe she blasted Hillary Clinton, saying the Democratic candidate 'feigns outrage' about the recording while protecting her husband, who had been responsible for numerous sexual transgressions.

She implied the comments Trump swapped with Access Hollywood host Billy Bush were mere banter.

After last night's debate Palin posted on Facebook: 'My kind of locker room talk for y'all: Slam dunk.'

She added, mixing her sporting metaphors: 'Friends, the quarterback's doing all he can... we must all do our part 'cuz we're the line'.

Palin then quoted NFL coach Vince Lombardi: 'It's not whether you get knocked down, it's that you get back up.'

Sarah Palin is often portrayed as stupid by satirists in the U.S. but she connects with a sizeable number of voters, especially in Alaska and the Midwest

She initially called Trump's comments 'disgusting, shameful, totally disrespectful "locker room" garbage, privately shared between two Hollywood playboys over a decade ago.'

But the darling of the Tea Party backtracked and targeted Mrs Clinton and the media for what she perceived as an over-reaction.

She says Mrs Clinton found Trump's words 'horrific' but then went on to list a number of issues which the former Secretary of State did not apparently find horrific.

These included 'Her own husband's affairs...abusing his power with young interns, humiliating and discrediting victims...Cops murdered with Black Lives Matters activists taking side with the killers...the ISIS sex slave industry...Americans left to die in Benghazi at the hands of US backed terrorists...snuffing life out of innocent babies just inches from being born...Iran growing its dangerous nuclear program even after vowing to destroy Israel, thanks to her participation in the most dangerous deal America finds herself in.'

Palin continues to support Trump even as more than 30 senior Republicans, including her 2008 running mate Senator John McCain, dumped the disgraced candidate after the video tape was produced by the Washington Post.
