It wasn't just Donald Trump's rambling answers that left viewers of the debate confused last night.

A 'lepo' became the number one word looked up with Merriam Webster during the 90 minute debate as Hillary Clinton and Trump argued about the turmoil in the Middle East.

More people were looking up a 'lepo' than were searching for the correctly spelled version of Syrian city - Aleppo.

Lepo was followed by the search terms 'bigly' and 'demagogic'.

Trump has insisted that he was not saying 'bigly' - despite audiences in both debates hearing the word - but claims he was saying 'big league' when discussing his plan to cut taxes 'big league for the middle class'.

Merriam Webster confirm 'bigly' is a real word, meaning things done in a 'big' or blustering manner.

Clinton had then criticized her rival's 'demagogic rhetoric' about Muslims, and warned it is a 'gift to ISIS'.

Demagogic means 'of, relating to, or characteristic of a political leader who tries to get support by making false claims and promises and using arguments based on emotion rather than reason'.

Aleppo appeared again on the top searched for definitions during the debate - this time spelled correctly.

Aleppo is a city in Syria which has become a stronghold for terrorists in recent years

Merriam-Webster shared that 'bigly' is in the dictionary although Trump has insisted that is not what he was saying

The city, which has become a terrorist stronghold, became a key issue in the debate, as ABC News correspondent Martha Raddatz demanded to know what Trump would do about the crisis there if elected president.

'If you were president, what would you do about Syria and the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo?' Raddatz asked, reading a question submitted online. 'Isn't it a lot like the Holocaust when the US waited too long before we helped?'

Clinton answered first, and then Trump started his response by attacking her, blaming her decisions as Secretary of State.

His rival stated she had not been in office when the decisions on Syria were taken.

Other words in the top ten searched for definitions last night include 'locker-room' - Trump's explanation of the aggressive language he used towards women in video which emerged on Friday.

Petulant, socialism, and even the word debate were also looked up.
