India are eyeing a series whitewash of New Zealand after Ravi Ashwin led the way as the tourists were bowled out for 299 on day three of the third Test at Indore.

Ashwin (six for 81) could not stay out of the action and added to his wickets with two deflections at the non-striker's end to run out Martin Guptill and then Jeetan Patel backing up as India took a 258-run first-innings lead.

Openers Guptill (72) and Tom Latham (53) put on 118 until Ashwin struck for the first time when he had the left-hander caught and bowled off a leading edge.

The off-spinner upped the ante after lunch, Kane Williamson chopping on and Ajinkya Rahane holding two neat catches at slip as Ross Taylor and Luke Ronchi both went for ducks.

In between, Ashwin stayed on the scorecard with the faint deflection that did for the unfortunate Guptill from a Ronchi drive back at the bowler as four wickets fell for 14 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja broke a seventh-wicket stand of 52 when Virat Kohli's reactions were swift for a catch off Mitchell Santner's inside-edge at leg-slip - and Ashwin had Jimmy Neesham (71) lbw sweeping before seeing off Patel with his second party piece and then Trent Boult was last out caught in the deep.

India did not enforce the follow-on, and reached stumps on 18 for none - but without Gautam Gambhir, who retired hurt after exacerbating his shoulder injury when he had to dive in to complete a second run.
