WHAT COULD IT BE?

Many people on Twitter have speculated at what the new product could be.

One user, called Keng, replied to Mr Musk's tweet, saying 'Model 3 Part Deux' – hinting that it could be a new vehicle.

Others have suggested that Tesla has been working on an electric two-wheeler, such as Edward Patel, who tweeted: 'Time for a motorcycle maybe?'

Tesla recently released an update to its Autopilot 8.0 system, but it could also be planning to announce new features.

Musk's tweet read: 'Tesla product unveiling on the 17th (unexpected by most), followed by Tesla/SolarCity on the 28th.'

The Tesla CEO has previously hinted at the event on October 28, tweeting at the end of last month: 'Aiming for Oct 28 unveil in SF Bay Area of new Tesla/SolarCity solar roof with integrated Powerwall 2.0 battery and Tesla charger.'

But his latest tweet suggests that Tesla will be revealing something else on top of those new products.

The firm has recently faced criticism from customers in Norway about its Model S P85D cars.

The model is best known for its stomach-churning acceleration during 'Insane mode,' allowing the car to go from 0-60 mph in just three seconds.

But it appears that customers in Norway are not happy, and claim that the acceleration is not as fast as advertised.

Some 126 owners of the car are seeking money back from Tesla, and it looks like they could get as much as 50,000 kroner (£5,750 in UK and $6,155 in US) each.

WHAT'S IN AUTOPILOT 8.0?

Tesla claims there are dozens of refinements in Version 8.0 of its Autopilot software.

It will use advanced signal processing to create a better picture of the world using radar.

The company claims it will be able to bounce the radar signal under a vehicle in front using a radar pulse signature to see objects ahead in even zero visibility. This helps to decrease heavy braking.

The system will also take a highway exit if an indicator activated.

In the next update to the software – version 8.1 – it will follow a GPS system at highway exits.

The update will also offset the car in the lane when overtaking a vehicle close to the edge of its lane.

A flashing white border will appear on the instrument panel along with audible alerts for drivers.

The car will not reengage Autosteer until it is parked if the user repeatedly ignores warnings.

The software will also improve its auto lane change availability.

If in manual mode, the car will also alert the driver if it is about to leave the road and the steering wheel has not been used to take action. The car will activate Autosteer to avoid a collision.
