  • Bush has been suspended indefinitely from Today show effective Monday
  • Appears in 2005 video in which Donald Trump talks about groping women
  • Went to lunch Monday with one of his three daughters in Encino, California

Billy Bush cried when a tape of him making lewd comments about women with Donald Trump surfaced, an insider has claimed.

The Today show host has been suspended indefinitely as NBC News reviews the situation. Carson Daly will replace him on Tuesday's 9am time slot.

'Billy was devastated and crying when the leaked tape of him with Donald Trump in 2005 was first leaked to The Washington Post,' a source told Us on Monday. 'He was crying that his career was over.'

Monday marked the first weekday since the recording was made public.

Two sources told Variety Monday that Daly would step in for Bush on Tuesday's show.

It was unclear whether Daly was expected to replace Bush for more than one day.

Bush, the nephew of former president George H W Bush, George W Bush and Jeb Bush's cousin, looked far less polished than he usually does on set as he went to have lunch with one of his three daughters in Encino, California.

The suspended host wore grey track pants and flip-flops. He is usually clean shaven but on Monday sported a five o' clock shadow.

His daughter Josie walked by his side while Bush spoke on his cellphone.

NBC News hasn't said when Bush could return to the Today show. Sources from the network told TMZ it's highly unlikely he will ever come back on Today.

Trump addressed his own comments, in which he referred to grabbing women 'by the p***y', during Sunday's presidential debate.

He called them locker room banter. Senator John McCain and Vice-President Joe Biden have both used the term 'sexual assault' instead.

The 2005 footage was recorded during the taping of an Access Hollywood episode, during Bush's tenure.

Access Hollywood producers were reminded about the tape when a recent Associated Press story quoted former Apprentice employees saying Trump was 'lewd and sexist' on set, the insider told Us Monday.

'Everyone at Access Hollywood was talking about it and how to cover it,' the source said. 'One of the producers remembered the 2005 tape and the Access tape librarian went through the archives to find the tape.'

The Washington Post published the tape on Friday without attributing it to a source.

Bush deleted his Twitter account shortly afterwards.

'Obviously I'm embarrassed and ashamed. It's no excuse, but this happened 11 years ago - I was younger, less mature and acted foolishly in playing along. I'm very sorry,' Bush, who was 33 when the tape was recorded, told Us on Friday.
