They may take a stressful few months of planning but weddings are meant to be joyous affairs; they don't call it the happiest day of your life for nothing.

But as wedding season winds down after an action-packed summer, brides have taken to internet forums to share their wedding disaster tales.

From one bride whose dream dress went missing to a priest who called the bride the wrong name throughout the entire service, brides have shared their horror tales - and they might just put you off tying the knot.

One bride revealed on Reddit that she had forked out several thousand pounds for her dream designer wedding dress but when she went to slip into her dream gown on the morning of the wedding, it was nowhere to be seen.

She quickly discovered that the hotel's maids had mistakenly thrown it away - and by the time she had realised, it was nowhere to be found in any of the hotel's waste rooms.

The distraught bride was forced to purchase a replacement dress off the rack in a local bridal shop just hours before she was due to walk down the aisle.

'The best man kept trying to correct him but I think he was partially deaf,' she wrote.

Another disastrous wedding saw the groom's parents show up half way through the ceremony - without an explanation.

One bride shared quite the horror story, admitting that she got so carried away with the champagne that she accidentally vomited down herself.

At the same event, her best friends - who were engaged - broke up.

One user explained how her groom's ex-fiance showed up at the wedding and turned it into a food fight.

'She grabbed the wedding cake, chucked it at us, and began screaming how he was a deadbeat while she grabbed table-wine bottles that she smashed on the ground.'

One woman shared a tale about her pal getting punched in the face by the groom, explaining: 'My friend got punched in the face by my groom because he decided that my mate was "taking too many photos of the bride."

'Weddings seem to bring out the worst in humanity.'
