A ferry crash at Sydney's Circular Quay which left at least 18 people injured was chaotic and bloody after passengers were thrown off their seats.

Some of the passengers were left with bruised and five were hospitalised after the boat crashed while attempting to dock at wharf four just before 5pm on Tuesday.

It's believed that the vessel, which was travelling from Rose Bay via Garden Island to Circular Quay, failed to slow down and hit a wooden backboard on one of the piers.

Mrs Stride injured her knee after she was flung forward into the metal seat in front of her while Mr Stride injured his arm on a metal railing.

The couple were left concerned for a friend who may have injured her chest after she was flung forward and people fell on top of her.
