Derren Brown horrified audiences when he made a woman eat a piece of glass on live TV.

Audience member Sarah Carson was asked by the psychological illusionist to place the glass on her tongue and to 'crunch on the big bits' in a mind-over-matter exercise during his West End production, Miracle, which aired on Channel 4.

Carson was initially instructed to shatter a lightbulb by tapping it against a plate of apple before wrapping the shards in a cloth and smashing them further with a hammer.

Brown then consumed a piece of broken glass himself before encouraging Carson to do the same.

She was clearly nervous as he placed a piece of glass on her tongue and told her to close her mouth.

To the viewers' horror there was an audible crunch as Carson chewed on the glass before taking a bite of an apple - with the magician explaining that a slice of the fruit would soak up the small bits of glass and line her stomach.

'When you feel like all the big bits have been crunched down you're going to take some water and swill everything around,' he said.

'It is safe to swallow as long as you've crunched down all the big bits.

'Don't tell yourself this is horrible, that this is dangerous.'

And,  obeying, Carson swallowed the lot.

Brown then placed the left over glass into a box, signed it, and told her: 'The next time you're faced with a risk, you can look at this and remember, you took a big risk, you ate a piece of broken glass in front of 2,000 people.'

People have been taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the scene, amazed that Carson went through with it.

One social media user wrote: 'Derren Brown just made a girl eat glass yet nobody is scared of him as a national threat.'

Another tweeted: 'Wouldn't catch me eating glass for nothing... Derren Brown is amazing but am I the only one wondering what happens at the other end.'

A third joked, 'Was thinking about seeing Derren Brown live one day but he just made a woman eat glass... so actually I'm good'.

However some people suggested it might simply have been a stunt and the glass was fake.

'Wow Derren Brown made someone eat some sugar glass that melted in her mouth so she could swallow it - amazing,' one man wrote.

Another said: 'That's gotta be some sort of foxes glacier mint and not a proper light bulb eeeek!!!'
