Dignity in his darkest hour: Rooney has the courage to face the music as he's axed for the first time by England
MATT LAWTON IN LJUBLJANA: When Glenn Hoddle broke the news to Paul Gascoigne that he was not going to the 1998 World Cup, the midfielder kicked a chair, punched a lamp and gave the then England manager the distinct impression that he was about to belt him, too. Gareth Southgate was a member of that squad in La Manga 18 years ago but it’s fair to say the encounter he had on Sunday with the finest England player since Gazza was rather less dramatic. Southgate said Wayne Rooney responded to being dropped for a competitive game for the first time in 13 years of international football with great professionalism, and the performance he gave here underlined that.

Federer AND Nadal both out of world's top four for the first time in 13 YEARS
The last time Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were both outside the world’s top four, Andre Agassi was No 1 and Roman Abramovich was about to purchase Chelsea FC for £150million. That was back in June 2003 and on Monday — more than 13 years later — was the first time since then that neither the great Swiss or his Spanish rival were among the leading quartet. Perhaps it will go down as the day that the era of the Big Four was officially over, as Japan’s Kei Nishikori overtook Nadal to take up fourth position in the rankings.

SPECIAL REPORT: Owned by Class of '92 and hated by most in their division, how are Salford City doing in their quest to reach the Football League?
JACK GAUGHAN: Edgeley Park on Saturday afternoon. Almost four thousand are on the gate with Salford City in town. Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, too. But for one Stockport County supporter, his focus is on a technical area 10 yards to the right. More bothered about goading a manager on his haunches than Stockport turning this feisty National League North clash on its head, spluttering spleen and jabbing a finger towards Anthony Johnson, one half of Salford's absorbing management duo.
