'I’m not perfect and am not able to do it all': Amy Adams discusses striking a balance between home and family life as she poses for ELLE magazine

She's five-time Academy Award nominee and and a doting mother to her daughter Aviana.

But Amy Adams, 42, has revealed she used to carry to much weight of expectation when it came to her work and family life, in an interview with ELLE Magazine.

The American actress credits Sheryl Sandberg's book 'Lean In' for helping her adjust her attitude towards her day to day life.

Update your work wear with a Balenciaga striped shirt like Amy

If you’re after a smart alternative to a silk blouse, a vertical striped shirt is a great addition to any work wear wardrobe. Check out how Amy Adams was styled in the new Elle UK magazine in an oversized striped shirt by Balenciaga.

The storied house is now headed by avent garde, Georgian born designer Demna Gvasalia who studied in Antwerp. Since his appointment, Balenciaga has re-focused on its core aesthetics on sculptural shapes.

We love how this look can be easily re-created by simply buying a striped shirt, one size larger or by heading off to the mens' section. In fact, just treat the man in your life to a new shirt and steal it a few times for the perfect day-after-date-night outfit.

But if you're going for that editorial look, follow the link on the right to add a piece of Balenciaga to your own wardrobe. She told the publication: 'My expectations of myself were so high. I needed to allow myself to be flawed, both at work and at home, and accept that I’m not perfect and am not able to do it all.

'I’m like, oh, I can’t Lean In anymore. I just want to fall back. And there’s such a great thing about release. And it doesn’t mean I’m giving up anything. I love the message of the book, I don’t want to make a political statement, but you know what I mean. I was putting in so much – I can’t do it all.'

Amy previously found herself at the heart of the Sony email hacking saga which revealed that her American Hustle male co-stars were paid more than their female counterparts.

Addressing the disparity between the sexes, Amy said: 'The negotiation comes to a standstill and I have to make a choice, which a lot of women do. I can walk away.

'But I choose not to…This is an issue not just about women’s pay; we need to work on how women are viewed in society and then the pay will be reflected in that…

'Right now time is more important to me. So that’s what I negotiate because any time I’m working, I’m not spending with my daughter.'

The red-headed beauty also explained how she felt comfortable being 42 and that she viewed Dame Judi Dench as an inspiration.

'I’m really proud to have made it this far and to feel this happy about it, said Amy. 'I have a six-year-old daughter – I don’t want to teach her that she’s only valuable at a certain age.

'I’m so obsessed with Judi Dench. She has so much life and so much beauty. And the twinkle and the sparkle and the vibrancy. We’re not judging her by the standards of youth but by the standards of spirit and character…I don’t know her at all! But I love her so much!'

The Fighter actress has been compared to the stunning Charlize Theron, but she humbly said any comparison ended when she was young.

She said: 'I gave up wanting to look like Charlize when I was, like, 12. I have short legs, I’m athletic, I have pale skin that reacts to cold and hot moisture. You just have to accept who you are. In those comparisons, I always lost.'

With the US presidential race dominating news outlets in the run up to the election, Amy spoke of her pride of seeing a female candidate on the ballot paper.

She enthused: 'It is beautiful to tell your daughter that a woman is running for President. I get emotional. England has had female leaders for generations, but we have not had that.'
