Delayed flights, food poisoning and pickpockets are all common gripes of the British holidaymaker, but it turns out their biggest annoyance when holidaying abroad is other Brits. 

A new survey has questioned the habits of people from the UK when they take a foreign trip, asking about everything from their culinary tastes to hotel preferences.

It revealed that their own nationality's tendency to hog the sun lounger and get drunk regularly ruined their own holiday.

In the research, conducted by leading travel search engine Kayak, nearly nine out of ten participants said they get annoyed with fellow British holidaymakers while away on holiday.

Fifty-eight per cent of those questioned find other Brits ‘too drunk and rowdy’ while abroad and a further half also said they don’t believe local customs are respected. 

Being unable to control their children (47 per cent) and complaining about everything (37 per cent) also featured highly on the list on holiday gripes.

Other things that irritate people about their fellow Brits include 'shouting when people don’t understand them', not covering themselves up appropriately and hogging the sun beds.

A health conscious seven per cent even bemoaned Brits not wearing enough sunscreen.

Suzanne Perry, a travel expert at Kayak, said: 'Holidays are about doing what you want to do.

'The best advice I can offer is to try and act how you would expect others to – that way, you hopefully won’t go too far wrong.' 

The research also found that in many cases Brits liked to seek out the comforts of home as soon as they land. 

Eight in ten said that while abroad, they like to eat the same sort of food they do at home, with 56 per cent enjoying full English breakfasts whilst on holiday. 

It also uncovered a trend for a lack of  interest in local culture - for those that have stayed in a resort, nearly one in ten admitted that they never even left it on their last holiday, with a further 12 per cent saying they did so just once. 

And one in five Brits admitted that they never visit any cultural attractions when on holiday.
