The UK has been issued with a severe storm alert as heavy rain, hail and thunder batters its way across England and Wales (shown left and right). The Met Office warned of torrential showers and gale-force winds in South Wales and much of the English border counties, with flooding possible near the coast. Parts of the south west could experience thundery downpours for much of the day, with an inch of rain falling in as little as three hours.
