Ollie looked visibly shell-shocked during the aftermath of the killing, before eventually mumbling 'I'm so sorry darling' and told the camera: 'I think that’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my entire life.'

Later in the episode the TV personality broke down in tears as he chatted to his mum explaining what he had just done.

Fans were left reeling at the brutal scenes with many flocking to Twitter to display their outrage.

One viewer wrote: 'Oh my God Ollie Locke is showing absolutely no remorse for the crocodile. Tell you what let's see the crocodile eating him that's good TV.'

Another added: 'It's not a kill for survival if you've deliberately flown people out from Chelsea to disrupt nature #CelebrityIsland'.

'Horrid programme. Really don't fancy seeing Ollie Locke stabbing a crocodile to death thanks,' wrote a disgruntled viewer.

Meanwhile Diversity star Ashley Banjo wrote: 'What a great show for a brilliant cause, but is the setup and then televised killing of a caimen really necessery?'

The star's MIC co-star Lucy Watson, who is a keen supporter of PETA, was among those to call out Ollie on his behaviour.

She tweeted: 'I think there are better ways of raising money for charity than killing a caiman for entertainment. Especially when you can afford food.'

Although Ollie has not yet responded directly to the criticism following Sunday's episode, he did retweet a fan who said 'Only @ollielocke could hunt crocs in a pink two piece'.

He also added: 'The most important thing about @TheIsland is to make sure you donate anything you can to stop this awful disease! @StandUp2C Love you all! X'.

A Channel 4 spokesperson explained any killings on the show were performed "humanely".

They said: 'The premise of the series, in aid of Stand Up To Cancer, is to see if when stripped of all the conveniences of modern life, celebrities have what it takes to survive and feeding themselves is a fundamental part of this.

'Those on the island all received training on how to kill animals humanely and this was utilised properly in each instance.'
