It begins with a stern forewarning from its protagonist, and as always he does not fail to deliver in the action packed trailer for forthcoming film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

The new movie sees Hollywood veteran Tom Cruise reprise his role as Reacher, a former US Army Major whose handy fists and nose for trouble frequently land him in compromising situations.

In his latest, Reacher falls foul of the police after four burly men are left bleeding and unconscious outside a local restaurant.

‘One guy took them all out with his bare hands,’ an incredulous officer explains as they surround the badly injured party.

All signs point to a bloody and bruised Reacher, who is seen enjoying a meal through the restaurant window, seemingly nonplussed by the mayhem his latest confrontation has generated.

But after being cuffed, he issues an ominous warning to the arresting officers as they wait for back up.

'Two things are gonna happen in the next 90 seconds,' he explains, nodding to a pay phone in the corner of the room.

'First, that phone over there’s gonna ring. Second, you’re gonna be wearing these cuffs on your way to prison.'

'That’s one hell of a prophecy Mr. Reacher,' chuckles one, but his smile falters as the phone promptly rings.

'It's just gonna keep on ringing,' urges Reacher as the officer cautiously answers, resulting in the immediate sound of approaching police sirens.

'Who the hell are you?' he asks, the receiver still held in his hand as police cars surround the restaurant.

Adapted from the popular series of novels by British author Lee Child, the forthcoming film follows the success of 2012 hit Jack Reacher.

Set four years after that $200 million blockbuster, Never Go Back sees the titular character return to his old military headquarters, only to be wrongly accused of a 16-year old murder.

The film, shot on location across New Orleans, also stars Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge, Patrick Heusinger and Danika Yarosh.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will be released in the United Kingdom on October 20 and the United States on October 21.
