Bruno goes home from hospital

Daily Mail

After 28 days in a psychiatric hospital, Frank Bruno was yesterday well enough to return home.

The 41-year-old former world heavyweight boxing champion gave a thumbs-up sign to wellwishers as he was driven off to his mansion by his elder daughter, Nicola.

He remained inside the property in Stondon Massey, Essex, for the rest of the day, exercising, listening to music and chatting with relatives.

Bruno declined to answer any questions about his recent experiences.

His agent, Kevin Lueshing, said: "Frank is delighted to be out of hospital and he is now looking forward to a speedy recovery."

Bruno was taken to the Goodmayes Hospital in Ilford last month after friends and family became concerned about his bizarre behaviour.

Police and paramedics spent three hours coaxing him to go with them to hospital in an ambulance.

The ex-boxer looked fit and happy yesterday as Nicola, 21, arrived at the hospital around 9am in an electric blue Volkswagen Polo.

She chatted to staff for around 25 minutes before collecting her father from a side entrance of the unit.

Bruno's former wife Laura, 43, who visited him several times in hospital with their three children, said she had feared for his life before he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and admitted to hospital.

She told the Sun: "It was clear that Frank was depressed and I was worried sick.

"He wasn't eating, he wasn't sleeping, his voice was slow and he looked like a shell of his former self."

She vowed to help Bruno recover now he had been released from hospital.

"I've been visiting Frank in hospital and I'm going to stick by him now," she said.

She described leaving her ex-husband in the psychiatric hospital as "the hardest thing I've ever done in my life".

She said: "It was utterly heartbreaking to watch a man who had once been champion of the world walking around looking dazed and confused.

"In the hospital, Frank kept saying Laura, Laura, Laura - calling my name over and over again.

"Watching his agony was unbearable but I knew I had to be cruel to be kind.

"I turned my back, walked out of the hospital and burst into tears."
