Luis Suarez  pulls on the goalie gloves in Uruguay training... but pays the price as he suffers nasty clash with defender Diego Godin

  • The move backfired as he suffered a nasty clash with Diego Godin

Luis Suarez is never one to hold back when on the field but the Barcelona forward has paid the price for his latest bout of enthusiasm.

The Uruguay striker, who is preparing for his team's World Cup qualifier with Colombia on Tuesday, took the surprise decision to don some goalkeeper gloves in training with Oscar Tabarez's side.

Worryingly for Uruguay boss Tabarez though, Suarez took a tumble while standing in between the posts, writhing around on the floor in agony after suffering a nasty clash with hard-nut defender Diego Godin.

Suarez, who is so vital for both club and country given his impressive goalscoring feats, got up and took part in the rest of the session but his clash with Godin must beg the question as to what he was doing in goal in the first place.

It's not the first time Suarez has used his hands on the pitch though, his famous blocking of a Ghana shot at the 2010 World Cup seeing him sent off and marking his latest bout of controversy.

Uruguay visit the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez on Tuesday to take on Colombia, a fixture which is likely to see Suarez go head-to-head with Real Madrid's forward James Rodriguez.

Ahead of travelling to Barranquilla, Uruguay are in a strong position in their aim to make it to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Tabarez, Suarez, Godin and Co top the South American qualifying group on 19 points, their six wins from nine games putting them ahead of both Brazil and Argentina.

As they look to maintain their position at the summit of their qualifying group, Uruguay will be hoping Suarez suffers no further problems from his clash with Godin.

The former Liverpool man, 29, may have a chequered disciplinary past but there's no doubting his importance to his country.

That said, Suarez was joined by a host of other attacking talent in training with his country, Paris Saint-Germain's Edison Cavani another big-name option available to Tabarez.

Last time out, Uruguay were 3-0 winners over Venezuela as they continued to stamp their mark on their continent's opposition.

On that occasion Suarez failed to find the back of the net, though he more than played his part as he teamed up with Cavani to tear the opposition to pieces.

Cavani struck twice and Nicolas Lodeiro also found the back of the net in a comfortable victory and after missing out in that game, it would be no surprise to see Suarez back among the goals against Colombia.

That's so long as he's recovered from his training ground clash with Godin, of course.
