And that's it!

Thanks very much for joining me today. I'll be back at 9 tomorrow with - I suspect - some more fallout from Paolo Di Canio v Sunderland.

16:56

Colin Young: Sunderland are considering taking legal action against former manager Paolo Di Canio following a series of explosives interviews over the weekend.

The club are studying two interviews the Italian coach gave in the last three days in which he labelled players unprofessional, two-faced, rotten and cowards.

The former Sunderland head coach spoke to Football Focus and the Sun on Sunday in response to remarks made by captain John O'Shea last week. He called the Republic of Ireland international 'two-faced'.

16:53

Charlie Skillen: Nicolas Anelka has taken to Twitter in the wake of the row over his 'quenelle' celebration.

The West Brom striker was threatened with an early end to his career at the Hawthorns as he faces an FA charge over the controversial celebration, said to be anti-semitic.

Serie A club Lazio were rumoured to be lining up a move for the former Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal striker, but the Frenchman quashed talks of a move, still insistent he had done nothing wrong.

16:48

Riath Al-Samarrai: Cardiff are now briefing that the signings of Wilfried Zaha, Fabio and Kenwyne Jones might not be announced until tomorrow. No issues, apparently, just the slow and arduous process of paperwork. Face meet palm.

16:42

Sami Mokbel: I'e had it confirmed that PSG officials are in Newcastle. They are understood to be thrashing out a deal and indicated that they are willing to meet the asking price.

The Magpies turned down a £14million bid for the midfielder over the weekend.

16:35

Mark Webster: FA Cup day is all about a few shocks and surprises. And on Saturday, round four certainly delivered. Even away from the actual games and results.

First there was Paolo Di Canio on BBC 1’s Football Focus. Perched on a chair in what appeared to be a 1930s sitting room, it looked like a classic Poirot ‘reveal’. And in this case, it was the former Sunderland manager who done it.

16:27

Craig Hope: Leighton Baines has pledged his future to Everton by signing a new four-year contract.

In doing so, the Liverpudlian has snubbed the chance to join former boss David Moyes at Manchester United.

Baines’ deal will keep him at Goodison Park beyond his 33rd birthday, the likelihood being he will see out his playing days on Merseyside.

16:20

ITV have announced they have gone for the glamour FA Cup fourth round replay between Fulham and Sheffield United.

It'll be on ITV4 next Tuesday.

16:13

Joe Ridge: Chris Wilder to Northampton Town. It’s a strange one, whichever way you look at it.

On Monday, the 46-year-old was confirmed as the new manager of the club at the foot of the Football League after resigning his post at League Two promotion-chasers Oxford United at the weekend.

Wilder inherits a playing squad bereft of confidence having registered just one win in their last eight games in all competitions.

They are six points adrift of safety. You can’t get much more rock-bottom than that.

16:02

Branislav Ivanovic believes Chelsea are ready and capable of stopping the Manchester City juggernaut as they prepare to travel to the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League and FA Cup.

Oscar's delightful free-kick earned a 1-0 win over Stoke on Sunday to set up an FA Cup fifth-round tie with City, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's favourites for the Premier League title.

Mourinho thinks City, who are in contention for an unprecedented quadruple, have it all to lose after their investments in recent seasons.

15:55

A die-hard Everton supporter has got the Liverpool motto 'You'll never walk alone' tattooed across his back.

Passionate Blues fan, Matty Bowman, 27, hasn't had a change of heart ahead of Tuesday's Merseyside Derby. Instead, he had the inking done to support a little boy with a mystery illness.

Matty got the etching to raise money for George Johnson, four, who will die unless he meets with a specialist doctor in the USA.

15:46

Simon Jones: Rio Ferdinand may be attracting offers from the likes of LA Galaxy to go to the MLS next season but he remains intent on taking his first steps into coaching.

MLS franchises are continuing to look for star names to lift the game's profile and the possibility of taking the same steps as Ryan Nelsen also appeals to Ferdinand.

The 35-year-old is ready to leave United at the end of the season but is considering retiring from playing and concentrate on getting his coaching badges.

15:37

David Moyes has confirmed Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie trained on Monday morning and could return for Manchester United's Barclays Premier League encounter with Cardiff at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Rooney has been missing with a groin strain since the New Year's Day defeat by Tottenham, while Van Persie suffered a thigh problem in the Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk last month.

15:29

Arsene Wenger will be extending his contract as Arsenal manager, the club's chief executive Ivan Gazidis has confirmed.

The Frenchman, who has been at the club since September 1996, will likely extend his tenure into a third decade when he puts pen to paper in the coming months.

Wenger, 64, is enjoying his best season at Arsenal in years and they currently lead the Barclays Premier League ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea.

15:21

Joe Strange: As Bryan Oviedo was carried off the Lamex Stadium pitch shortly before six o’clock on Saturday evening, Everton’s travelling support belted out his name in unison.

It wasn’t because they had to, but because they wanted to. Oviedo has earned a place in the hearts of Evertonians this season through hard work and the most positive of attitudes.

We now know the Costa Rican had fractured the tibia and fibula bones in his left leg, a freak injury which has brought his season to a premature end and almost certainly ruled him out of this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

15:14
15:11

Laurie Whitwell is at West Brom talking to manager Pepe Mel, while Anelka is tweeting about interest shown in him from abroad.

All very coincidental.

Here are Mel's quotes: 'Yes I've already spoken to Nicolas - the only thing he wants to do is help the team beat Aston Villa. I think he showed against Everton he's got no problem - the most important thing for me is his performance in the pitch,' also confirmed he will play against Aston Villa.

15:04

Dominic King: Ian Ayre has explained why Liverpool failed to capture their main January transfer target Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has joined Chelsea and Liverpool's Managing Director said: 'We have not held back from doing any deals.

'The only reason we have not done this one is because the player told us that he did not want to come.

'We will not overpay for players. But we have proven - and will continue to prove - that when the right player and the right deal is available we will move for it.'

14:59
14:52

Riath Al-Samarrai: David Ngog has completed his move to Swansea City for an undisclosed fee. The Bolton striker has been in South Wales for talks today, as has Blackpool winger Tom Ince.

14:45

Dominic King: Liverpool have announced another new global commercial deal. Garuda, the Indonesian Airline firm, will now become the official training kit sponsors. Garuda have been Liverpool's official aircraft carrier since 2012.

14:38

Arsenal have announced a new long-term partnership with Puma which will see the company become the Barclays Premier League club's official kit suppliers from July 2014.

Although no official figures were confirmed on Monday, the commercial deal has been described as 'the biggest deal in Puma and Arsenal's history'.

The Gunners are understood to receive around £30million a year from main sponsors Emirates Airlines, and it has been reported the new deal will be for a similar amount when Puma takes over from Nike, who Arsenal have partnered since 1994.

14:31

Ivan Gazidis has continued at the Emirates, saying: 'We've always supported him. Arsene has always been committed to the club we are relaxed about it.

'Arsene will be extending with us and at the right time we will make that announcement.'

14:21
Arsenal announce Puma deal (with money available)

Arsenal have announced a new long-term partnership with Puma which will see the company become the Barclays Premier League club's official kit suppliers from July 2014.

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: 'This is a very exciting deal with long term global partnership with Puma. they will be producing match day and training kits and other branded merchandise which will be on sale all over the world.

'The new partnership represents the biggest commercial deal in the history of Puma and the club. big step in our progression on and off the pitch. The money from the deal will be available from the start of the 2013/14 season.'

14:13
14:05

Kenwyne Jones proposed transfer to Cardiff City appears to have been completed after the striker changed his official Twitter biography to describe himself as 'Cardiff striker'.

Stoke have agreed a swap deal that will see Peter Odemwingie leaving in the opposite direction, although neither club has confirmed the player exchange with medicals and personal terms yet to finalised.

However, Jones is obviously confident enough that the move will go ahead - ending a three-and-a-half season spell with the Potters.

13:58

Wolves have rejected a bid from Celtic for striker Leigh Griffiths.

Manager Kenny Jacket said: 'We’ve had a bid from Celtic which has been formalised but the club have turned it down.

'We do understand every player has their price but we are not desperate to sell players here. Leigh has gone public to say he is interested in the Celtic situation as most Scottish lads would be when a club of that size come in. But the deal would have to be right for us and we will have to see how it goes.

'If not Leigh is still part of our squad and is with us for Oldham tomorrow and Bradford on Saturday.'

13:51

The January transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday. As the deadline approaches, Sportsmail's Simon Jones gives you a rundown on the business likely to be done in the Premier League this week…

13:44

Gareth Bale is struggling with a leg injury and will sit out Real Madrid's Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg with Espanyol on Tuesday night, coach Carlo Ancelotti has announced.

Bale has started Madrid's last three matches, but was taken off at half-time of Saturday's 2-0 league win over Granada at the Bernabeu.

Ancelotti revealed after the match that Bale had been replaced as he 'was not comfortable after getting kicked', but said it was more of a niggle than an injury and expected the world's most expensive player to be fit for Madrid's next match.

13:35

Juan Mata has been handed the No 8 shirt by Manchester United.

Can you hear that sound? Yep, that's the 8756 pieces on 'Man United's greatest ever No 7s' being sent to the bin.

13:28

Join Adam Shergold and Ian Ladyman at the link above to follow the press conference at Manchester United unveiling £37.1million man Juan Mata as their new signing. It kicks off imminently.

13:19

Declan Warrington: Curtis Woodhouse has been appointed the new manager of Goole AFC.

Predecessor David Holdsworth was sacked after Goole fell to 14th in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South after their 3-0 defeat by Coalville, when club captain Karl Colley was also sacked for trying to punch a supporter moments after being sent off.

Former Premier League footballer and England Under-21 international Woodhouse, now a pro fighter training for a shot at the British light welterweight title against champion Darren Hamilton on February 22, was previously Holdsworth’s assistant.

13:10

Sami Mokbel: Arrived at the Emirates Stadium for today's Puma announcement. The sports brand has signed £30m a season deal with the Gunners to be their primary kit manufacturers. Press conference is due to start at 2pm.

13:01

Simon Jones: Liverpool scouts watched Saul Niguez play for Rayo Vallecano against parent club Atletico on Sunday night.

The 19-year-old midfielder played in an unfamiliar centre-back role and endured a torrid evening as he was booked and scored an own goal in a 4-2 defeat.

Arsenal and Manchester United have also watched Niguez as they consider bids for the Spain U21 man.

12:53

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at old rival Jose Mourinho by saying his team do not get an easy ride over fixtures.

Chelsea boss Mourinho said last week that the Gunners get a certain "influence" when it came to their schedule, something Wenger was eager to refute on Monday morning.

'It is simple - look at the fixtures and analyse it. I trust you will give an objective view,' the Arsenal boss said.

12:46

Charlie Skillen: Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have agreed a sensational swap deal that could see Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge next season, according to reports in the Spanish media.

The Blues own Atletico keeper Thiabut Courtois, hailed by many as the best young keeper in Europe thanks to his performances on loan in the past three seasons.

But the 21-year-old would like to stay in Madrid, with Blues boss Jose Mourinho wanting star striker Costa in return. David Moyes had hoped to line up the forward for a move to Old Trafford.

12:37

Charlie Skillen: Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn't the shyest of footballers, with his acerbic tongue and exuberant personality often creating headlines just as much as his lethal prowess in front of goal.

Now he's taken things one step further by stripping off and plunging into freezing cold water for a new advert for car manufacturer Volvo.

With two Swedish icons in 'Ibra' and Volvo coming together for the video, the PSG striker proves his ice-cool persona is true as he goes for a dip, hikes and hunts across snowy mountains and shows off his tattooed torso by working out at home.

12:31

Mesut Ozil can help Arsenal beat Manchester City and Chelsea to the Premier League title this season, according to Gunners legend Thierry Henry.

Henry has every faith that Arsene Wenger will lead the club to silverware this season for the first time since winning the 2005 FA Cup - with the Germany star playing a key role.

'I can say right now that everybody is expecting Arsenal to collapse, just as they were expecting it earlier in the season. But they didn't,' Henry told Goal.com.

Making the difference: Thierry Henry believes Mesut Ozil can power Arsenal to the title this season
12:26

Simon Jones: West Ham are poised to make an improved £5million offer for Leeds United striker Ross McCormack on Monday.

Leeds have rejected an initial proposal of £3million plus and extra £1m on appearances and the Upton Park club will return with £4m plus £1m.

Test of resolve: West Ham will make a second bid for Leeds United's Ross McCormack in the region of £5million
12:22

Sunderland have recalled Connor Wickham from his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Black Cats are looking at loaning out teenager Duncan Watmore this week and you'd perhaps expect Wednesday to be at the head of the queue for him.

12:15

Adam Shergold: Every day Sportsmail will take a look at several European papers to see what are the biggest sports stories creating talking points on the continent.

The Spanish dailies reflect on a weekend in which Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid all won, meaning a solitary point continues to separate the top three.

AS features a terrific picture of Cristiano Ronaldo performing an acrobatic overhead kick during Real's 2-0 win over Granada, comparing the technique to other great bicycle kicks of the past.

12:08

Matt Lawton: Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Juan Mata transfer was that at no point did Manchester United and Chelsea engage in talks about the Spaniard.

There was no dialogue between club officials — not even when Chelsea entertained United at Stamford Bridge on January 19. Not once was Mata mentioned as officials dined in the directors’ box.

Instead United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward instructed the club lawyer to send a written transfer offer to Chelsea chairman and lawyer Bruce Buck last Thursday. Chelsea then replied, again in writing, with one or two changes and an agreement was reached.

12:01

Michael Essien has signed for AC Milan from Chelsea on a free transfer.

11:53

Ian Ladyman: Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand believes the arrival of record signing Juan Mata will give David Moyes’ under-performing stars a ‘kick up the backside’ as they try to save their season.

Mata will train with his new team-mates for the second time today after arriving from Chelsea for £37m and is expected to play some part against Cardiff in the Barclays Premier League tomorrow night.

Already Mata’s arrival has lifted spirits around the club’s training ground but 1968 European Cup winner Crerand believes some of United’s players will need to raise their levels to stay in the team.

11:47

Sami Mokbel: Chelsea will offer to start grooming John Terry as a future manager when formal discussions over a contract extension begin.

The Blues skipper is currently taking his UEFA ‘B’ licence and has made no secret of his aspirations to go into management once his playing days are over.

His immediate future at Stamford Bridge remains unclear with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

11:38

Simon Jones: Bit more clarity on PSG's bid for Adnan Januzaj. It was actually made before he signed a five-year deal in October but was intended for this month.

11:29

Simon Jones: Arsene Wenger is keen to tie up a deal for French international Yoann Gourcuff this week.

The Arsenal boss is a long term admirer of the 27-year-old attacking midfielder who has scored three goals in 13 league appearances this season.

Lyon have been hit by financial problems in recent years and despite the club president stating no-one is for sale the Gunners inquired about their asking price at the start of January.

11:20

Riath Al-Samarrai: Kenwyne Jones's move from Stoke to Cardiff has not yet been officially announced but Jones certainly seems sure that it's a done deal - he's referring to himself as a 'Cardiff City striker' on his twitter page.

11:12

Arsene Wenger wants right-back Bacary Sagna to stay at Arsenal beyond his current deal at the end of the season.

French star Sagna has been at Arsenal since 2007 but still has yet to pen a new contract at the Emirates.

Gunners boss Wenger revealed he would have to dip into the transfer market at the end of the season if Sagna decides not to renew, but his preference would be to keep the Frenchman.

10:58

Simon Jones: Arsenal defender Nico Yennaris is joining League One Brentford.

The 20-year-old right-back, from Leytonstone, who made his Arsenal debut in the League Cup against Bolton in 2011, has had spells on loan at Notts County and Bournemouth but is set to join London neighbours Brentford on a free transfer.

The League One leaders are hoping the England U19 international can help maintain their push for promotion and ensure Championship football for next season.

10:51

Matt Barlow: Bernhard Heusler, president of FC Basel, said: 'This makes us very happy. The selling of Salah into the Premier League is the next puzzle piece in this special story.'

They bought him two years ago for 2million Swiss francs.

10:44
10:36

Simon Cass: West Ham manager Sam Allardyce will not be making any more new signings before the transfer window closes on Friday night.

Allardyce, who boosted his squad with Italian pair Marco Borriello and Antonio Nocerino signing loan deals until the end of the season last week, was unsuccessful with a £3million-plus bid for Leeds and Scotland forward Ross McCormack.

The Hammers boss was tipped to go back in with an improved offer but said: 'I don't expect to be too busy now. Those two signings (Borriello and Nocerino) reach our 25-man squad limit so I don't see us doing any more business.'

Below is Nocerino trying out his new Hammers shirt for the first time.

10:29

Simon Jones: Bolton are in talks over a loan deal for Middlesbrough striker Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Wanderers are in the process of selling David Ngog to Swansea and need a replacement with 24-year-old former Everton striker Jutkiewicz pinpointed by manager Dougie Freedman.

10:22

Riath Al-Samarrai: I've had it confirmed by a source close to Tom Ince that he will be in Wales today to discuss personal terms with Swansea City about a transfer from Blackpool. I gather Crystal Palace have also met Blackpool's asking price and both they and Swansea are currently front runners to sign Ince.

10:15

Chris Wilder has been confirmed as Northampton Town's new manager.

The 46-year-old resigned from his post at Oxford United this weekend to move to Sixfields.

Northampton sacked Aidy Boothroyd last month.

10:10

Riath Al-Samarrai: At long last there should be some white smoke from Cardiff today. They have three deals very close to completion, with Wilfried Zaha due to sign from Manchester United on loan and Fabio coming in from United on a permanent deal.

Stoke's Kenwyne Jones is also swapping positions with Peter Odemwingie, which Mark Hughes expects to be completed today.

All three had medicals at St George's Park yesterday and personal terms are all believed to have been agreed. Sources on all sides of all three deals expect them to be announced today, but then again it feels like that has been said all month.

10:03

Adam Shergold and Dominic King: Leighton Baines has agreed a new four-year contract with Everton, with manager Roberto Martinez describing the deal as a 'phenomenal boost' for the club.

The 29-year-old England left-back has committed his long-term future to the Goodison Park club in a blow to Manchester United and other clubs who were keen on signing him.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Tuesday night's Merseyside derby with Liverpool, Martinez said: 'It is a phenomenal boost. He has signed a new contract.'

09:56

Arsenal will host Liverpool next month, and the boss merely said: 'It's interesting and difficult. We have little advantage by playing at home. We will try to come out of it positively.'

09:49

Jack Wilshere is a doubt for Arsenal's game away at Southampton tomorrow with an ankle injury, Arsene Wenger has confirmed.

The boss also said: 'Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is fitter but still isn't at 100 percent. I'm not sure if he will start.'

09:42

Millwall are set to complete the signing of Shaun Williams from MK Dons today.

The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the best footballing midfielders outside the top two tiers, and Ian Holloway has said he has a 'wand' of a left foot and plans to revolve the Lions' side around him.

09:34

Ian Ladyman: Manchester United's record signing Juan Mata has vowed to win the Barclays Premier League with his new club and believes he can live up to his £37m price tag.

Mata will be unveiled at a press conference at his new club early on Monday afternoon after joining from Chelsea over the weekend.

And the Spain midfielder is ready to feature against Cardiff at Old Trafford on Tuesday night after telling manager David Moyes he is willing to play in any of the three positions behind the central striker.

09:29

The Everton boss was asked about Bryan Oviedo's ankle injury, sustained at Stevenage over the weekend.

'He's in great spirits as he's been inundated with messages and a lot of affection. The integrity he showed when getting carried off, telling the players to win the game, was incredible.

'Reality kicked in when he got to the dressing room. He will have the surgery this evening and then it is just a question of counting down the days.

It is one of those injuries that will give you a very broad timescale. It could be five or six months but it depends. If Bryan could make the World Cup that would be an incredible boost. If he can't make that, he will be ready for pre-season.'

09:20

'Leighton Baines is a phenomenal boost. He has signed a new contract. To have him secured and his best years at Everton means a lot. We are all excited. That is an understatement.

'We are all looking forward to his experience. It is for the next four years. He has just turned 29. I know fans will be delighted. He is more than a footballer at our club.

I think you look at the moment of his career, the World Cup around the corner, the daily standards he sets. I'm just looking at what he can get over the next four years and the best is yet to come. His understanding of the game is incredible, he has the focus and tranquility to get even better.'

09:13
BREAKING: Leighton Baines has signed a new long-term deal with Everton

Well, what a start to the week for Evertonians! They travel to Liverpool tomorrow and will be buoyed by the news that left-back Leighton Baines has penned a new four-year contract at Goodison Park.

09:10

Mohamed Salah's has completed his move to Chelsea from Basle on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

The 21-year-old leaves the Swiss side for Stamford Bridge with the Blues having to pay around £11million for the winger, who will wear the No 15 shirt.

The Egypt international said: 'I'm very happy to sign for Chelsea, such a big club in the world. I hope I can make the Chelsea supporters happy and have a good career at the club for many years to come.'

09:02

Ian Ladyman: David Moyes has pledged to throw new boy Juan Mata straight into action against Cardiff City in the Barclays Premier League on Tuesday, then promised there will be more big signings coming to Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s miserable season took a sudden turn for the better with the £37.1million signing of Mata from Chelsea. And now they are increasingly confident Wayne Rooney — whose £250,000-a-week deal has 18 months to run — will agree a new contract.

United’s approach to Rooney has been considerably more inclusive than that taken by Sir Alex Ferguson. It is understood he was made aware of the desire to buy Mata and has been assured there will be more big names on the way in an attempt to influence any decision he will make on his future.
