The Countess looked smart in a structured white top with flared sleeves and a bead-encrusted hem. She paired it with a flared black skirt and a pair of pointed black courts which may have caused her to slip as she left the exclusive restaurant.

Sophie was attending the Belgrave Square eatery in her role as patron of DEBRA, a charity devoted to research into the skin condition epidermolysis bullosa.

On arrival at Mosimann's she was warmly greeted by Anton Mosimann himself, the prominent Swiss chef who rose to fame in the eighties when he converted a Scottish Presbyterian church in 1988 into the eponymous restaurant.

The former Dorchester Maitre Chef de Cuisines, 69, looked delighted to see Sophie as he ushered her inside in what was a grey and drizzly day in London.

Sophie's visit to Mossimann's came at the end of a busy day for the mother-of-two who this morning chaired a Women in Business meeting at Buckingham Palace.

Sophie, who is married to the Queen's youngest son, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, has been showcasing more outré styles of late including pieces by Prada, Roland Mouret and Bruce Oldield.

One regarded as one of the more 'frumpy' royals she has won style plaudits and it is believed to be the work of David ‘Quicky’ Quick, who was once Sophie’s deputy butler and cook, but has apaprently morphed into the person who keeps her wardrobe as meticulously well run as the Queen’s.

She recently spoke of the 'pure hell' of training to cycle 450 miles from Scotland to London for the Duke of Edinburgh Award's 60th anniversary.

Writing for MailOnline about such a ‘life-changing’ experience, she admitted that her family thought she was ‘quite mad’.

‘At the start of this year I had almost no experience as a road cyclist. Like many people, I had only ever gone on occasional bike rides with my family,’ Sophie said.

‘But from the start I was determined to succeed, and to be one of the many committed people who will take on a Diamond Challenge this year in support of the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). ‘
