Jesse Metcalfe says he will leave wedding to fiancée Cara Santana another two years... after dating the actress for almost a decade

He popped the question aboard a 50-foot sailboat on New York City's Hudson River in August after eight years together.

And despite being madly in love, Jesse Metcalfe, 37, has revealed he won't be tying the knot with fiancée Cara Santana, 32, for another two years. 

Spilling details on their forthcoming wedding plans, the former Desperate Housewives star said they are planning to marry in a secret East Coast location.

Jesse told Entertainment Tonight: 'We kind of set the date of September 2018. We're locking down a venue right now. It's gonna be on the East Coast, and that's all I can tell you!'

And despite having picked out the venue for their big day, Jesse has revealed that the only other thing he is hoping to have a say on is the music.  

'I feel strongly about the music and I think we both agree and feel strongly that we just want to create an environment and throw a great party that everyone enjoys'. 

Music aside, he disclosed that he lets Cara handle the rest of the planning.

He added: 'She kinda runs everything by me, so if something jumps out at me and I'm like, "No! I definitely don't want that," then I kinda get to put my two cents in. But for the most part, it's her party.'

And despite having a large pool of friends, Jesse admitted that it would be an 'intense' decision to pick just a few close groomsmen for his special day.   

The hunk gifted his long-term girlfriend, 32, a stunning 5.5-carat emerald cut diamond ring when he proposed this summer.

The whole evening was meticulously planned for the surprise proposal, right down to having their song - Eric Clapton's Pretty Girl - play in the background as they watched the sun set.

'It's been a long time coming, but we couldn't be happier,' the Jesse told US Weekly shortly after, referring to the eight years the couple has been dating.

'Don't they say it's a carat for every year you're together?' Metcalfe joked. 'I couldn't quite afford that, but I think I did pretty well.' 

Speaking previously about their relationship, Jesse said: 'I wouldn't say it was love at first sight. It was more of a slow burn, which I think is a better start for a relationship.

'I think if it comes on fast and furious, it generally fizzles out just as fast. We were slow and steady.'

Cara added: 'We took the time to get to know each other. We've known each other for, like, 10 years.'
