'Humanity is going down the toilet!' Horrified social media users poke fun at James Corden's EmojiMovie in witty series of tweets after 'terrifying' first image from the film is released

  • The film, being produced by Sony Pictures Animation will hit theaters in August 2017
  • The movie will follow Gene, an emoji with a wide array of expressions, on a quest for a code that will make him 'normal' like other emojis
  • The lead role will be voiced by comedian TJ, while Late Late Show host James will play a hand-shaped emoji called Hi-5

Next year, emojis will be leaping off our phones and on to our movie screens.

But not everyone is happy about the upcoming release of Sony Pictures Animation's EmojiMovie: Express Yourself. In fact, many are downright upset.

Following the film's announcement, many Twitter users took to the site to declare the news as 'confirmation that humanity is going down the toilet'.

'God has abandoned us all,' wrote one dramatic user, while another posted a GIF of Kermit the Frog making a frustrated face with the caption 'screaming internally' written over it.

One user lamented that he couldn't go back to 'a world before I heard there was an emoji movie being made.'

One went as far to say that the news made her want to 'kill myself', while another included a photo from the film alongside a tearful Vladimir Putin and a request to 'kick off this nuclear war early'.

The popular characters used daily by millions will be the subject of the new film, which will hit screens in August 2017 starring Ilana Glazer and James Corden in leading voice roles.

Broad City star Ilana will voice a codebreaker named Jailbreak, while TV host James will play Hi-5, a hand-shaped emoji.

The lead character in the film, an emoji called Gene who doesn't quite fit in with the other emojis, is to be played by TJ Miller.

The plot of the movie will see Gene, who has a wider range of facial expressions than other emojis, set out on an 'app-venture' to become a 'normal' emoji.

The group searches for a code that will help 'fix' gene and on the journey find a 'greater danger' that threatens the phone that the emojis all exist in.

A newly released still from the upcoming film sees Gene, a large yellow face with arms and legs and a tuft of yellow hair on his head, flanked by a hat-wearing Jailbreak and Hi-5 as they run through a digital world.

Poking out the corner of the screen is an animated version of the ever-popular poop emoji.

'Hi-5 is a high-five emoji who is a highly motivated, and highly dramatic, hand on a mission (sorry), and the brilliantly versatile, ebullient, and always lovable James Corden fits this part like a glove (sorry again),' said director Anthony Leondis in a statement.

'For the rebel ‘break all the codes’ computer programmer emoji Jailbreak, Ilana Glazer is the kind of singularly free-spirited, fearless, and funny actress to make girls really feel the empowered "nobody’s gonna keep me in a cage" attitude this character exudes.'

He added: 'And, of course, TJ Miller has proven himself to be one of the most genuinely inventive comedic actors around, uniquely capable of connecting and who can convey just about any expression—and often does!'

Planning for the movie was announced back in July 2015 after Sony beat out two other studios for the project for a reported seven-figure deal.

The announcement also comes with a joke audition tape of T.J. going up for the part of Gene, doing his best to contort his face into different emojis.

It doesn't seem as though everyone is pleased at the prospect of an emoji-based movie. In fact,
