Mata looked in high spirits as he posed for photos with fans and will hope to carry on his positive mood on Monday when United face Liverpool at Anfield.

Many thought Jose Mourinho would cast Mata aside when taking over from Louis van Gaal in the summer but the former Chelsea and Valencia star has been a prominent figure under the Portuguese.

Mata has started five of United's opening league games and recently ousted the much maligned Wayne Rooney from the No 10 position.

But Mata's positive early season form has seemingly not impressed new Spain boss Lopetegui, who left him out of La Roja's recent World Cup qualifiers.

Spain did not seem to miss Mata, though. They secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw away against Italy before beating Albania 2-0 on Sunday thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Nolito.
