'He was really endearing': Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong confirms he played Mark Zuckerberg's wedding for free and says ceremony was surprisingly modest

With all the money in the world, Mark Zuckerberg can practically buy whatever his heart desires.

But it didn't take money for the Facebook founder to have his favorite singer perform at his wedding as Billie Joe Armstrong revealed he played at the billionaire's special day for free.

The Green Day frontman, 44, explained on Tuesday night during a TV appearance that he didn't take a dime from Zuckerberg, who he found to be an 'endearing' and 'nerdy' Green Day fan.

Appearing on Watch What Happens Live, Armstrong fielded a question from host Andy Cohen, who asked: 'Billie Joe, when you sang at Mark Zuckerberg's wedding, what was the craziest thing that made you go "oh man, this guy's rich?" 

'And, is it true that you performed for free?'

'Yeah uh, so I did perform for free,' Armstrong responded, 'he was kind of like a Green Day fan, almost in a nerdy kind of way. 

'Which was really endearing and uh, there was nothing about it where I thought that it looked like he had a ton [of money] the way that he lives, it fits his age, I would say. He seemed pretty mellow about that.'

'He was kind of like a Green Day fan, almost in a nerdy kind of way,' Armstrong revealed, 'which was really endearing.' (Zuckerberg pictured in 2011)

Armstrong also revealed he played Last Night On Earth at the wedding: 'Mark wanted me to play this song… this song is one that I wrote for my wife of 18 years. It better be for her, or I'd be in deep trouble.'

The Facebook co-founder and CEO, now 32, married Priscilla Chan after nine years together in a ceremony which took the media by surprise in 2012.

Hosting 100 guests at their $7million home, the couple were married the day after Facebook's much vaunted IPO, which valued the social networking giant at over $100billion at the time.

Although Zuckerberg is a multi-billionaire, he gave his wife a ruby wedding ring bookended by two diamonds that was estimated by one jeweler to be worth $25,000.

Meanwhile, the American Idiot songwriter played a game called 'Are They An American Idiot?' with host Cohen on Tuesday night's show.

Billie first branded New Jersey governor Chris Christie as an idiot, promptly followed by disgraced Olympian Ryan Lochte, sexting politician Anthony Weiner, Trump supporter Scott Baio and homophobic Kentucky clerk Kim Davis.

In his opinion Brad Pitt, Taylor Swift, the Kardashians and Miley Cyrus are not idiots.

As for TV host and former stripper Amber Rose, he appeared to be unsure of who she is and replied: 'I don't know'.

The musician described his 'dream band' as The Who's Keith Moon on drums, Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols on guitar and Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath on bass with himself as singer.

Billie appeared on WWHL with Saturday Night Live veteran Molly Shannon, 52.

Molly said her least favourite skit from SNL was one with Will Ferrell, where he was shown to lose weight.

Billie is currently starring in the movie Ordinary World with Selma Blair.

'Little independent film, very kind of guerrilla style filming, it was really fun,' he said.

The singer once played Madison Square Garden, at age 22, completely naked with Green Day.

'I wasn't sure if I was ever going to be playing Madison Square Garden again, so I figured, I'm going to do it naked,' he shrugged.

'I just loved the way you were shredding the shaft… of your guitar,' giggled Andy, 48.

Green Day, who formed in 1986 in California, have just released a new album called Revolution Radio.

Molly is appearing on the new HBO show Divorce with Sarah Jessica Parker.

'We're always laughing and talking about TV shows, she truly is the best,' she said.
