Days of Our Lives actress Patricia Barry dies aged 93

  • Iowa-born Patricia Barry died at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday
  • She had amassed more than 100 appearances in TV, film and theater
  • Best known for appearances on 'Days of Our Lives,' 'Guiding Light' and 'All My Children'

Patricia Barry, a mainstay of daytime television who appeared on 'Days of Our Lives', 'Guiding Light' and 'All My Children', has died. She was 93.

Barry died at her Los Angeles home on Tuesday, a publicist for the actress said Wednesday.  

After winning a Rita Hayworth look-alike contest, she was contracted by Warner Bros and made her big screen debut in 1946.  

Iowa-born Barry amassed more than 100 appearances in TV, film and theater.

She made a mark in TV movie-of-the-weeks like 1959's 'The Wicked Scheme of Jebel Deeks,' with Alec Guinness, and alongside Sid Caesar and Ronald Reagan in 1961's 'The Devil You Say'.

Other credits of Barry's included 1949's 'Riders of the Whistling Pines' with Gene Autry; 1964's 'Send Me No Flowers' with Doris Day and Rock Hudson; and the New York Yankees 1962 film 'Safe at Home!'

But Barry may have been best known for long-running stints on daytime soap operas. 

Among other roles, she played Addie Horton Williams from 1971 to 1974 on 'Days of Our Lives.'

She later moved on to 'All My Children' from 1980-81 where she played Peg English - who raised her adopted daughter Brooke (Julia Barr) while running an international drug cartel under the alias The Cobra.

She was born Patricia White on November 16, 1922, in Davenport, Iowa. Her father was a doctor. 

Her first professional role came in a 1944 production of 'Laughing Water' by Henry and Phoebe Ephron and she soon begun landing roles on Broadway.

Her move to the big screen came after she won a Rita Hayworth look-alike contest and was signed by Warner Bros - her big screen debut came in 1946 as a showgirl in Her Kind of Man.

Barry is survived by her two daughters, Miranda Barry and Stephanie Barry Agnew, and two grandchildren. 

She was married to TV producer Philip Barry, who died in 1998.

She was one of the earliest members of Women in Film and a former president of the nonprofit advocacy organization. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter memorial services are planned for early 2017 in Los Angeles and New York.
