'Seems forever ago': Jon Gosselin posts throwback snap with daughters Mady and Cara for their 16th birthday

He's reportedly not been in touch with much of his family lately.

But apparently Jon Gosselin is still thinking about his estranged children as he wished them a happy birthday - two days late - with a throwback Instagram snap on Thursday.

The 39-year-old former reality star posted the photo to celebrate twins Mady and Cara's 16th birthday, which was actually on the 8th.

In the adorable picture, Mady and Cara sit on their dad's lap in front of a whimsically-decorated Christmas tree. 

Jon and the twins, along with his six other children and his then-wife Kate Gosselin starred on reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8, but he is no longer a fixture in all of their lives. 

Both girls are dressed in white and sport the same haircut featuring prominent bangs, while father Jon wears a festive, red holiday sweater.

He captioned the snap 'happy 16th Bday to Mady and Cara!!! October 8, 2000 seems forever ago.' 

While the post was clearly an overture from Jon, it likely won't be enough to undo the feelings of ill-will that much of his family harbors toward him.

Back in August, Cara and Mady revealed to People that they had stopped spending time with their father.

Mady offered: 'This year I'm going to turn 16. I'm going to be learning to drive, taking the PSATs, thinking about college... so much is going on in my life. And the last thing I have time for is a toxic relationship.' 

Cara added: 'I wouldn't even know what to say about him.'

Soon after Jon told Entertainment Tonight he was upset. 'I love my children very much. I've always been there for them and I always will be. It's shocking,' said the 39-year-old even though he was notified in advance by People that the story was coming out and was asked to comment but refused.

In August Jon also told Entertainment Tonight that in the wake of his rancorous divorce from his wife, Kate Gosselin, who won primary custody: 'I haven't seen all eight of my kids together probably in three years. Three to four years.' 

Later, he added: 'Madelyn and Cara, I don't see that much, or often. We're kind of not talking right now.'
