SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., Oct. 8, 2015  -- The annual search for the Longest Married Couple (LMC) in the United States and Canada begins on Saturday, October 10, 2015, it was announced today by Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME), the original faith-based marriage enrichment program in the world.

Both countries projects will run simultaneously from Oct. 10, 2015 to Jan. 10, 2016 with national winners named in both countries in February 2016. There also will be 50 state winners in the United States and provincial winners in Canada.

 

The highly acclaimed activity of recognizing couples for their long marriages, which is in its sixth year in the U.S. and third year in Canada, has drawn media attention from around the world. The 2015 U.S. winners, Dale and Alice Rockey of Olathe, KS, were featured in a segment of CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood.  The Rockeys were married 81 years. 

 

On the United States side of the project, in 2011 Marshall & Winnie Kuykendall from Lordsburg, New Mexico were honored for 82 years of marriage, while in 2012 Wilbur & Theresa Faiss of Las Vegas, Nevada were honored for 78 years of marriage. In 2013 John & Ann Betar of Fairfield, CT were honored for 80 years of marriage. In 2014 Harold & Edna Owings of Burbank, CA were recognized for their 82 years of marriage.

 

On the Canadian side the national winners have been 2013 - Alice and Arthur John of Ross River, Yukon - married 77 years and in 2014 - Clemon (Clem) and Mildred Mintz of Parry Sound, Ontario - married 80 years.

 

There are also state and provincial winners recognized at the same time each year for their longest marriages. There have been over 1500 couples nominated for the honors during the last five years. Winners of the LMC project are selected solely from nominations submitted.

"Once again we want to honor the longest married couple in the United States, as well as in each of the 50 states and territories. And, this year the Canadian longest married couple project will be held in the same time frame.” explained Dick & Diane Baumbach and Fr. Dick Morse, the U.S. coordinators for the special project and Jamie & Connie McNeill, the Canadian coordinators for the LMC.

 

The national winners will be recognized during Valentine's Week 2016, which coincides with World Marriage Day, which is the second Sunday of February.

An Alumni Group was established for previous national and state winners.  Previous state and provincial winners can vie for the national title, but they also are now considered members of the alumni of longest married couples in their individual states and provinces. This allows for new couples to be recognized for both state, province and national recognition.  "What a joy and inspiration it is to recognize a husband and wife who have been married for many, many years," the coordinators explained.


 

 

In addition to the longest married couple for the entire United States, recognition will also be given to a couple from each state and territories who has achieved that distinction. In the case of the national longest married couple, appropriate gifts will be presented to them by WWME national leadership team, at a ceremony to be held at the winner’s location during Valentine’s week. The state and provincial winners will also receive personal recognition and a special certificate of achievement from the Worldwide Marriage Encounter movement.

Nominations, which are open to all husband and wife couples regardless of religious affiliation, may be submitted by email, regular mail or by calling a special phone number.

The project encourages backers to become astronauts by helping to fund Overview One, SpaceVR's high-definition camera that will be placed on the ISS's cupola, offering an astronaut's perspective of the world to consumers.

Rewards for funding the project include a first edition poster of the Earth taken from Overview One, one month of access to the first 3D, virtual reality footage captured by Overview One, a limited-edition Samsung Gear VR mirroring the look of an astronaut helmet and an invitation to a VIP dinner with the SpaceVR team in San Francisco. The public can fund the project on SpaceVR's Kickstarter page and follow its progress on social media with the hashtag #BeAnAstronaut.

"Most people once dreamed of becoming an astronaut. In reality, only a tiny fraction of humanity has experienced life outside Earth's atmosphere – just 536 people out of the 12 billion who have ever lived," said Ryan Holmes, co-founder and CEO of SpaceVR. "Our project gives everyone the opportunity to become an astronaut and to realistically experience seeing the Earth in its entirety – recognizing its preciousness and fragility in our universe. It is our goal to offer this experience to anyone through every virtual reality platform."

SpaceVR's design includes the camera mount that will be 3D-printed on the ISS and fitted with a stereoscopic 3D virtual reality camera designed to capture live 360-degree views of its surroundings. The company's technology will eventually enable live video feeds captured from Overview One to be beamed to SpaceVR subscribers on Earth.

"We want to build a strong community that understands that space exploration is now in our hands. Backers will choose where we go next, be it another spacecraft or a distant planet," said Isaac DeSouza, co-founder and CTO of SpaceVR.

Once funded, the SpaceVR team will work with its partners, NanoRacks and Made in Space, to handle launch logistics, safety approvals and astronaut relations, and 3D printing, respectively. The company has also secured former astronauts, notable scientists and space entrepreneurs on its board to advise on business and space-related matters.

"When I traveled on the ISS and looked at Earth, my conception of the scale of our planet went from unimaginably large to absolutely finite and in fact, small," said Richard Garriott, private astronaut, video game designer and SpaceVR board member. "I later learned that this sensation is common among those who have been to space, and is known as the Overview Effect. We would all benefit if we had a shared experience of this kind – I am excited to see SpaceVR launch its Kickstarter project and take the first steps to making this happen."

The Kickstarter goal of $500,000 includes launch costs and SpaceVR's first year of operation. The campaign starts on August 10, 2015 and will run for 30 days until September 10, 2015.

Houston, TX - The Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME) community of Canada and the United States today announced the selection of a new leadership couple and priest for the North American Secretariat. They are Gene & Maggie Tokraks of Gilbert, Arizona and Bishop Bill Skylstad of Spokane, Washington.

 

The North American Secretariat oversees the Worldwide Marriage Encounter in the United States and Canada.  Together these countries, and their territories, are  interdependent in providing services to those who attend the Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend as well as other marriage enrichment programs sponsored by WWME.  A form of communication based on writing and sharing feelings is central to this experience. Couples learn how to connect at a deeper level and how to keep love growing over the years.

 

For Gene and Maggie and Bishop Skylstad, the Weekend is not a moment in time - it is the first step in a journey, a step that can help to heal the brokenness in today's society one couple at a time.

 

Gene & Maggie experienced their original weekend in 1994 in Phoenix, AZ.  They have been involved with WWME in various leadership roles for the past 21 years, including most recently overseeing WWME in Arizona, Southern California, Southern Nevada and Utah.  Bishop Bill attended his original weekend in 1974. He has been an ordained priest for 55 years and a bishop for 38 years.  He has also served as the president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. 

 

"We want to improve communications across all levels of our movement and with the Universal Church" said Gene & Maggie and Bishop Skylstad.  They added that it is important "to continue to establish cross-cultural personal relationships among the communities in Canada and the United States. These relationships will help us to continue to be open to one another as we move forward together."

 

Worldwide Marriage Encounter has been offering weekend experiences for over 47 years and is considered the original faith-based marriage enrichment program.  The programs are continually updated to keep abreast of changes in society, and WWME now offers evening and half-day programs that are presented at parishes and other church facilities.  The weekend program, traditionally presented as an overnight experience at a hotel or retreat center, can also be presented at the parish where the couples return to their homes in the evenings.   WWME has a presence in over 95 countries, which makes it the largest pro-marriage movement in the world.  In North America, the WWME programs are presented in English, Spanish, French, and Korean languages.
