'You can't listen to that': Mel Gibson keeps a lid on Oscar award predictions for his new film Hacksaw Ridge

Mel Gibson's new film Hacksaw Ridge is widely considered worthy of an Oscar award.

But the acclaimed director and filmmaker is keeping a lid on things, saying he just wants people to 'take something' from the much-anticipated film.

'You can't listen to that. You hear it. It is somewhere in the back file but one can't put much stock in that. It's a funny old world,' he told Fairfax Media

'I just want it to do well and for people to enjoy the experience and take something from it.'

Filmed in Sydney last year, the Braveheart star's first movie as director in a decade has even the staunchest of critics raving.

The Guardian's Andrew Pulver said Hacksaw Ridge 'couldn't be more perfect'.

'As repellent a figure as many may still find Gibson, I have to report he's absolutely hit Hacksaw Ridge out of the park,' the film editor wrote.

The Daily Telegraph in Britain echoed the views of critics the world over.

'Hacksaw Ridge is a fantastically moving and bruising war film that hits you like a raw topside of beef in the face – a kind of primary-coloured Guernica that flourishes on a big screen with a crowd.'

The 60-year-old actor and filmmaker told Fairfax he was thrilled with the film's acclamation.

'It is always gratifying that people enjoy what it is that you have done. They can throw raspberries at it, but you know. You don't make films for the elite because you want as many people to see them as possible and if they dig it, yeah, that's great.'

Hacksaw Ridge is based on the true story of conscientious objector Desmond Doss, who saved 75 men in the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa in World War II - without ever firing a gun.

'It's about a man who wouldn't touch a weapon and wanted to be part of saving lives in the worst place on earth,' director Mel said last year.

'I mean Okinawa was a horrific place... there were over 300,000 casualties, mostly civilian.'

Hacksaw Ridge will hit cinemas across Australia and New Zealand on November 3 and in the US the following day.
