Swimmer Mack Horton (left and right) has undergone surgery after receiving crucial advice from an anonymous fan who noticed a potentially life-threatening mark on the Olympic 400m freestyle champion. Horton, 20, posted a picture on Instagram (inset) on Friday showing that he had undergone surgery and offered thanks to the person who contacted the Australia swim team doctor via email to raise the alarm.

Australian man Max Bromson (inset) was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer in 2012, which left him in constant and excruciating pain. In July 2014 he took his own life with euthanasia drug Nembutal. His sister filmed her brother's final moments (left, right) in a bid to continue his advocacy for voluntary euthanasia.

Paedophile dance teacher Grant Davies, 41, (pictured left with former students) has been sentenced to 18 years after he pleaded guilty to the decade-long abuse of several students. Davies (bottom right and top right at court in 2014) was charged with a string of offences on nine victims aged between nine and 15, including sexual intercourse with a child at RG Dance Studios. He was also charged with using children to make pornography. In September 2014, a mother of two was jailed for at least 18 months for having her daughters, aged 10 and 13, pose for sexually explicit pictures and videos to send to Davies.

UPDATED Two young children (pictured left with their mother and father) have been stabbed to death in a suspected murder-suicide attempt as their father (pictured left with family) remains critically injured under heavy police guard. Police found the bodies of two young children - a three-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl - after forcing entry to a home nestled in a brand new estate in Yanchep, a coastal suburb in Perth's north, at about 10.30pm on Thursday. The children had reportedly been stabbed to death hours after they were seen playing in the front yard, while police said their father was found alive inside the home on Flight Vista with critical injuries.

Gable Tostee's (inset) father Gray worked off the stress of his son's murder trial as he took the family dog for a walk around their gated Gold Coast community the morning after the not guilty verdict, while his son hunkered down inside with the blinds drawn (right). Mr Tostee was his son's first call after Ms Wright plunged to her death and picked him up as police swarmed into his apartment building.

NEW A hunt is underway for a sickening 'scumbag' (inset) who threw a 14-week-old puppy into a creek before running off. The 'heartless grub' was caught on camera picking up Prada (left), a French bulldog, and chucking her (right) into a river in Bensville, on the New South Wales Central Coast. In the distressing footage, the unidentified man - who appears to be a teenager - is seen beckoning Prada and another dog down a path that crosses a river. The cruel teenager quickly scarpers, leaving Prada's four-legged friend panicking. The dog's owner, Michael Byrnes - who owns the security cameras outside his property - got home two-and-a-half hours later to discover that Prada was missing. After frantically checking the security footage, Mr Byrnes charged out to the bridge and miraculously found Prada was still there and, most importantly, alive.

A father in Italy has told of his agony after his wife was jailed for 30 years for murdering their eight-year-old son after he allegedly caught her having sex with his grandfather. Veronica Panarello, 27, main picture, from Sicily, strangled martial arts fan Loris, inset top right, with an electrical cable at home before dumping his body in a ditch. Panarello's claimed that her father-in-law Andrea Stival, bottom right, killed him because he discovered their affair. Mr Stival denied the affair calling the allegation 'just another lie of that crazy woman'. Her claims were dismissed by a judge. Andre's son David, 29, a truck driver, pictured top right with Panarello is now trying to rebuild his life. 'He lost his son, his wife and his job. His life is destroyed.' his lawyer Daniele Scrofani told MailOnline.

Harrowing videos have emerged which appear to show children in Mosul being tortured and beaten with hammers by Iraqi soldiers and militia. The civilians, some of whom look as young as eight, were assaulted while being interrogated by the Western-backed troops over whether they were loyal to ISIS, reports claim. It came after Amnesty International warned civilians caught in the crossfire of the battle to retake the city from ISIS may face execution and torture. One horrifying video shows a young man being hit on the knee with a hammer before a slab of concrete lands on his head in front of a crowd of soldiers.

A U.S. model got a nasty surprise when a flying drone slammed into the back of her head while she frolicked on a beach during a photoshoot - and got it painfully tangled in her hair. Incredible footage shows the flying robot follow two young women dressed in tiny bikinis as they dash into the surf. But suddenly it accelerates far too quickly and slams directly into the back of one of their heads. The alarming video takes the drone's point of view as it moves swiftly to the point of impact and then tumbles.

The organisation shot a stunning series of photos to show the disease can affect younger women too. Model Lana Rhodes (left) joined the project after a double mastectomy aged 26. Lana said: 'I'm very cagey about my scars, but this project showed me and all of the other women involved that there can be beauty after it all.'

A group of 4WD enthusiasts has been caught on video setting themselves alight after using an explosive and ill-advised trick to fix their tyre. Video footage shows the men, who are speaking Spanish, trying to repair a tyre that has popped off the rim during an expedition through thick jungle on muddy tracks. The enterprising group opt for a dangerous method of reseating the bead - but things go horribly wrong. After applying flammable liquid and lighting the rim on fire, the flames soon erupt, spreading across the ground and onto a number of the group.

Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi troops have moved through villages outside the city, finding the houses (pictured) rigged with explosives and underground bunkers (tunnel entrance, top left). In some cases, Islamic State fighters appear to have fled without putting up a fight. There are fears the jihadists will use chemical weapons, snipers, and booby traps to desperately defend their position. The fighting around Mosul has forced 5,640 people to flee their homes in the last three days, most in the past 24 hours, according to the International Organization for Migration.

School friends have created heartbreaking finger-paintings to remember Martin, 10, and Elisa Manrique, 11 (pictured left with their mother Maria). Their bodies were found alongside their mother Maria Lutz, father Fernando, 44, and pet dog in their northern Sydney home on Monday morning. It is believed the children were gassed to death and neighbours said they saw Mr Manrique installing a pipeline into the roof of the home just days earlier. Primary school students at Martin and Elisa's school, St Lucy's in Wahroonga, created paintings (right) in class on Thursday to tell the pair how much they will miss them as the school prepares for a remembrance gathering on Friday.

A homeowner in Spearwood, Western Australia, said three teens knocked on their door pretending their friend was injured before demanding chocolate and beer. The resident said they then started asking more personal questions, such as whether there were any dogs in the house, which the owner believed was an attempt to get inside. When they heard a dog bark, the resident said the boys got scared and left, running alongside the wheelchair.

Just looking at this crazy 4,000-metre-plus vertical peak in Switzerland is enough to give you a tinge of vertigo. But can you imagine plunging over the edge on a pair of skis and descending it free-fall? Well, for Swiss skier Jérémie Heitz, 27, this thought filled him with delight instead of dread, and he tackled the insane run like a pro, living to tell the tale. Photographs capture Heitz in action on a extremely sheer mountain in the Pennine Alps - his tiny silhouette barely distinguishable against the vast, snowy landscape. The extreme sportsman took to the slope while filming an adrenaline-pumping video for Red Bull. For the project he selected 15 of his dream peaks to ski down.

Craig Capeheart, from Indiana, recorded the moment a shark almost broke into his diving cage off the coast of Guadalupe Island, Mexico - the same location where two other incidents took place. Incredibly, Capeheart claims his near-miss happened on the same boat and in the exact same cage where fellow diver Ming Chang got trapped with a great white just weeks later. In another incident in the same waters, four more divers were trapped inside a cage with a 4.5metre shark after it bit through their air hose and then got stuck between the cage bars.

A budgie owner from the US has shared a video of her pet bird named Bubbles (left) taking a bird bath in her bathroom sink. The amusing video shows the bright blue bird getting its wings wet and having a sip of water as it runs from the tap (right). The video has been viewed over 665,000 times on Facebook by viewers all over the world.

A nine-month old female wombat has made her first steps exploring Australia Zoo, north of Brisbane. Bindi Irwin said the adorable joey has only emerged from its pouch (inset) in the last couple of weeks and is lapping up the attention from her keepers (main). The joey, who has yet to be named, has been busy exploring the zoo, being fed, taking naps and playing with keepers.

Vanilla Ice's wife of 19 years filed for divorce on Monday - her 46th birthday - in Palm Beach County, Florida, after years of living apart. Laura Van Winkle (left with Vanilla Ice, top right with daughters) last spoke to the rapper, whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, in June 2015, and says she 'can't live a lie any longer' by staying with him. According to Miami-Dade County records, Rob married Laura Giaritta on March 30, 1997. The two met at a Fourth of July party in 1994, Laura said, well after Rob's pop star status faded, long after Vanilla Ice dated Madonna, and soon after he survived a suicide attempt with a heroin overdose. Over the years, there was violence in the relationship. Rob was arrested three times in incidents involving Laura.The couple have two teenage girls but live in separate homes. Afia, an eight-month-old western lowland gorilla, was introduced to Romina, a 36-year-old female, at Bristol Zoo last Wednesday (pictured and inset). Zookeepers held their breath as adorable Afia approached Romina for the first time, hoping that the older gorilla will take on the infant's much-needed maternal role. Complications meant that Afia was delivered by emergency C-section and consequently she could not be raised by her biological mother. After Afia's birth, her mother Kera was not well enough look after her baby. Since she has recovered, she has been unable to strike a bond with Afia as she does not realise the little one is hers.

The enormous mammal was discovered dead on the sands of a renowned beauty spot at the Holkham National Nature Reserve in Norfolk. On Holkham Beach wardens from the reserve found the whale motionless on Thursday afternoon. Plans are now in place to remove the huge carcass while the beach remains open. Photographer Penny Clarke from King's Lynn encountered and took pictures of the marine mammal when she was out walking.

An especially sweet video shows the loving bond between a little boy and his best friend - a little sleepy monkey. The two pals shared a close cuddle on the couch in cute footage from Moscow, Ohio uploaded on YouTube . Ronnie Bullock Wilson, age 6, clung on tightly with his monkey Angel, age 19. At one point Angel briefly opened her eyes, before going back to sleep again.
