Commander Tony Fuller said police understand that many in the community may be fearful of revenge attacks.

'We ask the offenders to make contact with local police so that we can make arrangements to protect them,' Commander Fuller said.

'This is an extremely volatile situation which has been compounded by the death of another person on the island unrelated to this incident.

'We understand that the community is grieving and in shock. However police are asking the Elders and the community to assist in having these offenders come forward so that police can bring them to justice.'

Video footage obtained by police shows a man being struck by a spear thrown by a member of one of the opposing groups.

Police believe the man who threw the spear was the second man killed.

The fight started on Thursday, November 5 after a man intervened in an altercation between two women, which resulted in one being sent to the hospital unconscious.

The following day, on Friday, a male drove from the nearby community of Umbakumba to Angurugu to find out why the fight occurred.

Upon arriving, the issue escalated resulting in the brawl that involved machetes, spears and a 'variety of weapons.'

Shortly after the incident the three males returned with weapons causing a commotion.

'Police attempted to disperse the crowd but were forced to retreat due to the overwhelming numbers of armed persons who had gathered at each end of the street brandishing spears at each other.

'One of the group has thrown a spear which has in turn led to an exchange of spears between the two groups,' said Commander Fuller.
