NEC Challenge returns to test electical knowledge

THE SECOND ANNUAL National Electrical Code® (NEC®) Challenge, a contest to separate the true wonks from the wannabes, kicked-off in Ann Arbor, Michigan in July. The challenge invites electrical professionals from around the country to test their knowledge of the NEC in three major competitions, and online, with a $5,000 grand prize and bragging rights at stake.

Upcoming challenges will be held at trade shows in Chicago (September 27¬–30) and Baltimore (October 22–25). The winner of each challenge receives an iPad, a copy of the 2014 NEC, and will go on to compete against the other winners in a live webisode championship. The second and third place finishers will receive $1,500 and $500, respectively.

Derek Vigstol of Princeton, Minnesota, took home the $5,000 cash prize and the title of NEC Challenge Champion at last year’s inaugural challenge. He beat out Joe Brinley of Roanoke, Virginia, and Robert Watkins, Jr. of Denver in a three-round championship.

For those who can’t make it to one of this year’s challenges, the NEC Challenge is also available to play online. The top five performers are listed in real time on the website’s leaderboard, and will be awarded prizes on a weekly and monthly basis. To take the online challenge and for more information, visit
