NFPA’s Standards Council ends NFPA’s development of standards for the storage and retail sales of consumer fireworks

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Standard Council issued a decision from its March 2014 meeting that ends NFPA’s development of standards for the storage and retail sales of consumer fireworks. The Council, after fifteen years of sustained effort, has reluctantly concluded that there should be no NFPA standards for consumer fireworks. The Council reached this decision upon review of an appeal the American Pyrotechnics Association filed with ANSI to reverse the Council’s decision to limit the size of retail facilities for consumer fireworks until test data was submitted to validate sprinkler design criteria. The decision can found at www.nfpa.org/sc2014.
