September 3, 2013 – Casey Grant, research director for the Fire Protection Research Foundation (Foundation), was selected by the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) to receive the 2013 Norman Y. Mineta Excellence in Transportation Safety Award. The award was established by NASFM in 2005 and is given annually to an individual or team that has made a significant and lasting contribution to the safety of people, products and materials in transit. NASFM President J. William Degnan, New Hampshire State Fire Marshal, presented the award to Grant at the 2013 NASFM Annual Conference in Indianapolis on August 9.
Grant was selected for the Mineta Award based on his management of a large body of research conducted to support NFPA’s Electric Vehicle Safety Training Project. The project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, is designed to educate emergency responders about hybrid and electric vehicles. The goal is to meet the demand of the rising number of these vehicles on the road, and also to promote such vehicles to be more widely accepted.
"A major factor in the success of these initiatives has been the strong tie to the enforcement and emergency response community that Casey has forged," said Kathleen Almand, executive director of the Foundation. "With his guidance and direction, these projects have targeted the real needs of the community, and have quickly found implementation in safe practices."
"Casey’s work on the Electric Vehicle Safety Training Project will ensure that fire and electrical safety are not compromised as this new energy-saving technology is introduced," said NASFM President Degnan. "We recognize and appreciate his efforts to incorporate the concerns of the enforcement and emergency response community at every step of this impressive research program."
The Fire Protection Research Foundation is an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA.) Grant joined the Foundation in 2007 after a 20-year career at NFPA in the codes and standards division culminating with his role as assistant chief engineer and Secretary to the NFPA Standards Council. Since his transition to the Foundation, he has implemented and supported a number of research initiatives often aimed at supporting the enforcement and emergency response community’s needs, with a focus on improved safety.
