August 13, 2013 – The Fire Protection Research Foundation (Foundation), in association with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), will hold a symposium to set the stage for their five-year research agenda November 13-14, 2013 in Washington, D.C. "The Next Five Years in Fire and Electrical Safety – Updating the Foundation’s Strategic Research Agenda" will serve to benchmark progress against the 2008 agenda, identifying new issues and exploring needed new areas of focus.
"The goal of this symposium is to continue the discussion on current and emerging issues likely to have a significant impact on fire and electrical safety in the next five years," said Kathleen Almand, executive director of the Fire Protection Research Foundation. "The information presented will shape the research agenda of the Foundation to meet the needs of stakeholders in the safety community that have come to rely on us for this research."
The symposium will feature architects, engineers, researchers, government officials, and others. There will be 10 sessions with over 20 presentations covering key areas such as:
- Changing urban landscape – the challenges it poses for fire and electrical safety
- SMART buildings – how sensor and information technologies are transforming the built environment and its fire safety context
- Sustainable building – maintaining fire safety with changing building contents
