June 22, 2015 – The International Fire Marshals Association (IFMA) Percy Bugbee Award was presented to James Crawford at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Conference & Expo in Chicago. The award, only the eighth given since its inception in 1969, was presented to Crawford today at the conference’s kick-off event.

The award was established in honor of Percy Bugbee to recognize a person whose significant and enduring contributions to public safety are in keeping with IFMA’s highest traditions. Bugbee dedicated more than 40 years supporting the objectives of IFMA to promote the science and improve the methods of fire protection and fire prevention and to enlist members’ cooperation in establishing proper safeguards against loss of life and property by fire.

With a similar dedication throughout his career, Crawford has advanced the fire prevention community into a new era through his vision and leadership. He is currently the project manager for Vision 20/20 National Strategies for Fire Loss Prevention, an initiative of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Crawford joined the fire service in 1975 as a volunteer firefighter and became a career firefighter within the next year where he remained for 30 years, mostly in the field of fire prevention. The last 18 years of his career were spent in senior level management, most recently as the Fire Marshal and Planning Chief in Vancouver, WA. Crawford has been an active participant with U.S Fire Administration and IFMA at the national level, including a term as president.

The mission of IFMA is to aid in the preservation of life and property by advocating, promoting, and providing leadership in the prevention or mitigation of fire, explosions, and other related hazardous conditions. Originally established in 1906 as the Fire Marshal’s Association of North America and reorganized as the Fire Marshal’s Section of NFPA, IFMA currently has more than 1,800 members worldwide.
