April 30, 2013 – Fellowships were awarded to four senior fire officials to participate in the Harvard University Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program, co-sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
The NFPA annually partners with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) to provide fellowships to the Harvard Program.
The awardees for 2013 are:
- Joel Baker, Deputy Chief, City of Atlanta Fire-Rescue Department
- Phil Eagleson, Chief, Saugeen Shores Fire Department, Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada
- Michael Romas, Assistant Chief, Milwaukee Fire Department
- Derrick Sawyer, Deputy Chief, City of Philadelphia Fire Department
Fellowship recipients will attend this three-week summer program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government on Harvard University’s campus in Cambridge, Mass. Through learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom, the program focuses on ensuring that public officials are well-equipped to be effective public leaders.

The opportunity helps to develop skills that enhance leadership abilities and ultimately influence change,” said Chief Russ Sanders, NFPA’s central regional director, executive secretary of the Metropolitan “Metro” Chiefs Association, and NFPA’s representative on the selection committee. “NFPA is proud to continue co-sponsoring this truly beneficial Harvard University program and the professional development of members of the fire service.”
