February 23, 2016– The Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), announced that its 20th annual Suppression, Detection and Signaling Symposium (SupDet 2016) will be held March 1-4, 2016 at the Doubletree San Antonio Downtown in San Antonio, Texas.
This year’s program will include 30 presentations focused on recent advances in research and technology, and how they can be put to use by the fire protection community. SupDet 2016 welcomes professionals in the fields of fire alarm, suppression and emergency communications to share their expertise and research, and to exchange ideas.
The first half of the symposium will center on the latest findings for warehouse sprinkler protection and the protection of lithium ion batteries, among other topics. The final two days will include presentations on residential smoke alarms, smart building applications, notification systems, and smoke characteristics. There will also be a keynote address on the history of fire given by Dick Gann of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Additionally, a half-day workshop will take place Wednesday, March 2, from 1-5 pm at the symposium site. The workshop, entitled “Big Data and Fire Protection Systems,” will help participants to apply big data to the inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of fire protection systems. Attendees will consider these questions, among others:
- How can data inform ITM decisions?
- What key data is needed, and what are potential sources of that data?
- How can NFPA can help with this effort?
