May 12, 2016 – The latest issue of NFPA Journal®, the official magazine for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), offers a preview of the 2017 editions of the National Electrical Fire Code® (NEC®)and NFPA 25, Standard for The Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems and the key changes coming to both. The issue also examines the making of NFPA 1616, Standard for Mass Evacuation and Sheltering—the new standard for mass evacuations and sheltering—and looks at combustible decorative features of buildings on the Las Vegas strip.
In an early look at changes to the NEC, the Journal’s Associate Editor Jesse Roman examines issues related to the generation, distribution and utilization of electrical energy. He also looks at the expansion of arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) and ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection and new safety measures aimed at workers and first responders found in the code’s newest edition. The preview of the revised edition of NFPA 25, includes important changes to the standard, including updates to make it easier to use.

- An in-depth look at the making of the new NFPA 1616, the needs it fills, who will use it and how, and how the code was conceived.
- New staff writer Ashley Smith offers an evaluation of combustible decorations on buildings and a related education session at NFPA’s Conference & Expo (C&E). Particular attention is given to the Las Vegas strip and last summer’s Cosmopolitan LV hotel fire, where artificial plants and decorative canopies allowed flames to spread rapidly.
- In “Perspectives,” a member of the new Technical Committee on Building Fire and Life Safety Directors sits down for a Q&A as the committee looks forward to its C&E education session.
- In “In Compliance,” Principal Fire Protection Engineer Matt Klaus discusses the important distinction between “preliminary plans” and “working plans” for a sprinkler design.
