Winter Haven, Fla. (October 9, 2013) – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and LEGOLAND® Florida heat things up in celebration of Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6-12) with a special fire safety day in the park on Oct. 10. Fire safety day will feature a fun challenge with a chance for guests to win annual passes to LEGOLAND Florida by competing against fire fighters on LEGO City’s Fire & Rescue Academy attraction. The event will also include a number of learning stations with key safety messages, smoke alarm testing, meet and greet sessions with firefighters, and a mystery build of a giant LEGO mural promoting fire safety.

According to NFPA, in 2011, U.S. fire departments responded to 370,000 home fires. These fires caused nearly 14,000 injuries, roughly 2,500 deaths and $6.9 billion in direct damage. The leading cause of home fires is cooking. Most home fires begin in the kitchen - the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is "Prevent Kitchen Fires."

"Featuring fire safety messages in LEGOLAND attractions gives children and their families the opportunity to learn about fire safety as part of an entertaining park experience," said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. "Families can use the information learned at LEGOLAND to take action at home to protect themselves from fire, such as making sure they have working smoke alarms and testing them monthly."

The fire safety event kicks off NFPA as the official partner of LEGO City’s Fire & Rescue Academy, adding to their existing partnership of The Big Test live action show.

"LEGOLAND Florida is thrilled to expand on an already exciting partnership with the NFPA where we can together combine fun and fire safety education to families in an interactive way," said Samantha Lane, Public Relations Representative of LEGOLAND Florida.

Other activities during October related to fire safety at LEGOLAND Florida include Firefighter Fridays, where real firefighters are on hand to speak to children and families about fire safety; HERO Days, special ticket pricing for active and retired police officers, firefighters and EMS employees in the U.S.

These activities add to the current line-up of more than 50 rides, shows and attractions at LEGOLAND Florida all geared to families with children ages 2 to 12. For more information on these events, visit www.nfpa.org/legoland or www.legoland.com.
