'I went thirty minutes without a cup of coffee': Janet Street-Porter moans about treatment at the Palace while receiving CBE

She might have been thrilled to have been awarded with a CBE in the Queen's honours list but Janet Street-Porter still had a bit of a gripe.

Re-enacting the moment she received her medal, the outspoken 69-year-old playfully told Loose Women on Wednesday she was left feeling parched.

She said: 'I thought the letter about my CBE was a practical joke. When I got to the Palace, someone told me the Queen would be doing it. I didn't know.

'I went thirty minutes without a cup of coffee': Janet Street-Porter told Loose Women about the treatment she was given at the Palace while she was receiving her CBE on Wednesday's show

Huge honour: The day before, she collected her medal and was thrilled to discover the Queen was there

'I was a little bit nervous. We were taken into a special room where we rehearsed for 30 minutes without even a cup of coffee.'

Fellow panellist Linda Robson roared: 'Not even a cuppa? What a liberty!'

Janet deadpanned: 'Maybe they were worried we would need the loo.'

She added: 'The man made me rehearse twice. I said to him, "I do a live TV show, surely three steps and a bob can't be that hard.'

Stylish: Janet revealed that Jasper Conran made her striped dress for the special occasion, and said that the Queen remarked that she must have had a busy career

She added: 'Then when it's time for you to go, she gives you a shake of the hand and a push away'

Janet revealed that Jasper Conran made her striped dress for the special occasion, and said that the Queen remarked that she must have had a busy career.

She added: 'Then when it's time for you to go, she gives you a shake of the hand and a push away.

'Then you have to go back and sit and watch all the others and pretend to look interested. It was fabulous though.'

Broadcaster Janet previously said being made a CBE was a 'surprise' because of her past criticisms of the Royal Family.

She also said: 'I thought the letter about my CBE was a practical joke. When I got to the Palace, someone told me the Queen would be doing it. I didn't know'

The former Fleet Street editor and senior television executive, who has appeared on or fronted a string of TV programmes over the years, said: 'It was a surprise because I've been quite outspoken about the Royal Family over the years - but never about the Queen.'

She added: 'I don't want to be too negative today but I said there were too many members of the Royal Family, but I think actually they've made loads of economies.

'But I'm here today because of my career in journalism and broadcasting and I accepted the award because I wanted to show women from my background what they can achieve.'

Janet came from a working-class west London family and thrived in the media industry, working in a variety of roles on national newspapers, commercial radio and television - finding fame in front of the camera presenting a succession of LWT programmes in the mid-1970s.

Later in her career she was head of youth and entertainment features at the BBC before becoming editor of the Independent on Sunday and going on to become a panellist on the popular ITV show Loose Women.

She said: 'I think my success is down to being very single-minded; it's not about luck, it's about working hard. I still haven't got a degree - I've been given honorary degrees.'
