Greece capital controls mean expat couple can't buy a home in the UK

When Mr and Mrs R moved to Greece in September 2006, like thousands of Britons they were looking forward to retirement in the sun. What they couldn't have foreseen is the huge financial earthquake which escalated a year later, the aftershocks hitting Greece harder than most other countries across the world.

FTSE CLOSE: Footsie posts gains as Carney takes questions from the Lords

The FTSE 100 closed up 31.24 points at 7017.64 after a volatile day for the pound, which underwent a sharp fall before recovering to $1.21 against the US dollar. This seemed to be sparked by relatively innocuous comments by Chancellor Philip Hammond, but lack of liquidity and a febrile mood ahead of Bank of England Governor Mark Carney's appearance before a House of Lords committee might also have been factors in today's currency moves. The US Dow Jones was down 45 points at 18,178 while Germany's DAX was off 3.9 points at 10,757.3 and France's CAC 40 fell 11.7 points to 4,540.8. Brent crude dropped below $51 a barrel.

National Express said total group revenues increased by 17 per cent over the three months to September 30, while pretax profits climbed by 9 per cent on a constant currency basis.

Carpetright said that stiff competition led to a 2.9 per cent decrease in like-for-like sales in the UK during the period, with chief executive Wilf Walsh flagging up 'variable consumer demand'.

The proposed takeover of Time Warner, maker of hit fantasy series Game of Thrones (pictured), by AT&T; could become an uphill battle with regulators.

Whitbread saw its pretax profits increase by 3.4 per cent to £263.6million in the six months to September 1, as revenues rose by 8.1 per cent to £1.56billion.

Fixed-rate savings accounts have crumbled in the last year

Savers looking for the stability of a fixed-rate account over the long term are facing pitiful returns as rates have plummeted throughout 2016. At present, the best buy five year fixed-rate savings deal in the independent This is Money savings table pays just 1.95 per cent. In January 2016, after a brief flutter of competition among new providers, savers would have been able to beat this rate - with a 12-month fix.

If you suspect that your property has subsidence, here are the warning signs to look out for, so you can take action early and prevent the damage from getting worse.

Dr Adam Posen also told The Mail on Sunday that senior Tory politicians were showing themselves to be 'monetary illiterates' through their attacks on Bank of England Governor Mark Carney.

Buy-to-let income map: Leeds postcode top for rental returns

Landlords in parts of Leeds could earn higher returns than anywhere else in the country, with a combination of affordable properties and decent rental income netting them an almost 11 per cent yield. That compares to a potential rental return before costs of just under 3 per cent across London.

With food prices set to soar in the UK, collecting and using coupons is a great way to get started - and this helpful list shows you where to look to get the best deals and how to use your vouchers.

Low rates and rising inflation mean more misery for savers

With a rate hike ruled out for the foreseeable future, the Government MUST now act to protect savers. The Mail on Sunday proposes a three-point cash savers' 'rescue' plan that Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer, should implement when he stands up in the House of Commons and delivers his inaugural Autumn Statement on November 23. It's not radical, it would not be costly to put in place BUT it would make cash savers feel a little more loved than they currently are.

Britain could threaten to halve corporation tax if Brussels is unwilling to offer a good Brexit deal, it emerged yesterday. Downing Street could cut the rate from 20 percent to 10 percent.

Would you live in a school conversion? Former boarding schools can make fine homes

Today, with pupil numbers falling by 5 per cent since 2008, it is small boarding schools outside the south-east that are up for sale. But now in response to what he sees as a lack of opportunity for long-term investors, former fund industry boss Daniel Godfrey has ambitious plans to launch a low cost, long-term mutual fund called the People's Trust.

MIDAS SHARE TIPS: Bar group serves up a mean cocktail but City wants a Revolution

Revolution Bars Group is doing all the right things, but the stock market does not seem to think so. The company announced it was floating early last year, setting a price range of 200p to 240p a share. Initially, there were hopes that demand for the stock would take the price to the top of the range. In the end, Revolution managed to float at only 200p. That was in March 2015, since when the price has drifted to 175½p. This is too cheap.

There is said to be dissatisfaction among chamber members at the ousting of John Longworth (pictured) and his replacement by former policy chief Dr Adam Marshall.

Midas tipped the shares exactly two years ago, when they were 312½p. Today, they are 345p and should rise considerably as the company continues to expand.

In British law, it is not an investment business. It is a casino, with the odds stacked against the punter. But Cyprus recognises it as an investment firm, which means that under European Union single market rules, the Financial Conduct Authority in London must register it alongside respectable stockbrokers and fund managers, despite its disgraceful record of lies, false claims and fines.

Major energy firms have told industry regulator Ofgem they fear breaking the law if they carry out its wishes to share customer information.

The Government is to change the law to allow individual bosses to be targeted after a system of fining the company itself was slammed by campaigners as ineffective.

Weaker pound lifts exports but slower domestic demand drags orders down

The latest monthly and quarterly trade surveys by the Confederation of British Industry offered a mixed picture of the state of British businesses in the aftermath of the Brexit vote in June. October's industrial orders balance fell sharply, from -5 in September to -17 last month, with firms expecting output to ease a little in the coming months, suggesting that, since exports are rising, the fall is down to lower domestic demand.

Banks and Tory MPs last night dismissed as 'nonsense' dire warnings by Anthony Browne, head of the British Bankers' Association, that financiers will move their business abroad due to Brexit.

Pension deficits are the 'unexploded bomb in your investment portfolio', says leading

Pension deficits were for years no more than a nuisance - a necessary cost that any large corporation had to pay as a consequence of employing large numbers of staff. But ever since the EU referendum corporate bond yields - which are used to value pension liabilities shown in company accounts - have hit all time lows and placed deficits in sharp focus.

The Government drive to auto-enrol all workers into pensions has led to the rise of an estimated 100 master trusts, which manage centralised funds for several employers at once.
