When Mr and Mrs R moved to Greece in September 2006, like thousands of Britons they were looking forward to retirement in the sun. What they couldn't have foreseen is the huge financial earthquake which escalated a year later, the aftershocks hitting Greece harder than most other countries across the world.

FTSE CLOSE: Footsie posts gains and pound hits $1.21 as Carney answers questions from the Lords
The FTSE 100 closed up 31.24 points at 7017.64 after a volatile day for the pound, which underwent a sharp fall before recovering to $1.21 against the US dollar. This seemed to be sparked by relatively innocuous comments by Chancellor Philip Hammond, but lack of liquidity and a febrile mood ahead of Bank of England Governor Mark Carney's appearance before a House of Lords committee might also have been factors in today's currency moves. The US Dow Jones was down 45 points at 18,178 while Germany's DAX was off 3.9 points at 10,757.3 and France's CAC 40 fell 11.7 points to 4,540.8. Brent crude dropped below $51 a barrel.

MONEY NEWS & ADVICE
Fixed bond bloodbath: Savers locking up their cash for five years get a worse rate than the top one-year deal on offer just 10 months ago
Savers looking for the stability of a fixed-rate account over the long term are facing pitiful returns as rates have plummeted throughout 2016. At present, the best buy five year fixed-rate savings deal in the independent This is Money savings table pays just 1.95 per cent. In January 2016, after a brief flutter of competition among new providers, savers would have been able to beat this rate - with a 12-month fix.
Low rates and rising inflation mean more misery for savers: Here's what the Chancellor must do to end this injustice
With a rate hike ruled out for the foreseeable future, the Government MUST now act to protect savers. The Mail on Sunday proposes a three-point cash savers' 'rescue' plan that Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer, should implement when he stands up in the House of Commons and delivers his inaugural Autumn Statement on November 23. It's not radical, it would not be costly to put in place BUT it would make cash savers feel a little more loved than they currently are.
'It took a burglar just THREE MINUTES to break into my house': TOBY WALNE invites a (reformed) thief to break in to test his security - and share tips to improve it
Toby Walne thought his home security robust. But reformed burglar Michael Fraser exposes its weaknesses - included a dusty keyhole, calendar by the window and labelled keys. Michael, who fronts TV show Beat The Burglar, shares his tips to keep your home safe this winter - and reveals the items burglars will be looking for.
Should you buy a school conversion? As pupil numbers fall, small boarding schools go up for sale - and may make a fine home
Today, with pupil numbers falling by 5 per cent since 2008, it is small boarding schools outside the south-east that are up for sale. Among closures is Chilton Cantelo School, 30 miles from Rossholme. La Sagesse, a former Roman Catholic school in the Newcastle suburb of Jesmond, which closed in 2009, is now home to 48 houses and flats by David Wilson Homes.
A home for real long-term investors: Former fund industry boss unveils his People's Trust that aims for 7% a year return
It may be a simple concept, but genuine long-term investing funds can prove tough to find. But now in response to what he sees as a lack of opportunity for long-term investors, former fund industry boss Daniel Godfrey has ambitious plans to launch a low cost, long-term mutual fund called the People's Trust.
MIDAS SHARE TIPS: Bar group serves up a mean cocktail but City wants a Revolution
Revolution Bars Group is doing all the right things, but the stock market does not seem to think so. The company announced it was floating early last year, setting a price range of 200p to 240p a share. Initially, there were hopes that demand for the stock would take the price to the top of the range. In the end, Revolution managed to float at only 200p. That was in March 2015, since when the price has drifted to 175½p. This is too cheap.
TONY HETHERINGTON: If the Belize authorities can kick out BDB why does the FCA list it with a clean record despite its appalling history?
In British law, it is not an investment business. It is a casino, with the odds stacked against the punter. But Cyprus recognises it as an investment firm, which means that under European Union single market rules, the Financial Conduct Authority in London must register it alongside respectable stockbrokers and fund managers, despite its disgraceful record of lies, false claims and fines.
Five things you need to know about the new BMW 5 Series - and why it will set the direction for executive saloons
BMW has found itself in the unusual position of playing catch up when it comes to executive class saloons. But now it has revealed the new 5 series and the lighter, faster car that can almost drive itself is likely to set down a new benchmark for rivals including Jaguar, Mercedes and Audi. We look at why.
My next-door neighbour died and days later her disowned relative was in her house removing items - what can I do?
My next door neighbour died five days ago. In her will she left everything to charity. She was a very reclusive person. She has one surviving relative who she disowned some time ago. Less than 10 hours after my neighbour died the relative was in the house and removed items. The will executor is a solicitor, but I do not know who.

Flower delivery platform Floom blossoms with the help of Instagram
Floom, a Deliveroo-style platform for florists, is one of a growing number of small firms using photo-sharing website Instagram to boost their sales. Founder Lana Elie says: 'It is similar to Interflora where you say where you are delivering and have a florist fulfil it, but it works a little differently in that we don't hide who the florist is and we don't tell them what products to produce.'

Deaths of four mine workers take the shine off Petra Diamonds as shares jump on report of a production boost
The firm, which has eight mines in South Africa and Tanzania, said production in the three months to September 30 rose to 1.1m carats - a 30 per cent increase from the same period last year. Revenues hit £77.5million and included the sale of a 138.57 carat white stone from its Cullinan mine for £5.3million and a 10.64 carat pink stone from its Williamson mine for £4.2million. Shares rose 5.6 per cent or 7.9p to 147.7p.
Mixed bag for manufacturers as weaker pound lifts exports but slower domestic demand drags orders down
The latest monthly and quarterly trade surveys by the Confederation of British Industry offered a mixed picture of the state of British businesses in the aftermath of the Brexit vote in June. October's industrial orders balance fell sharply, from -5 in September to -17 last month, with firms expecting output to ease a little in the coming months, suggesting that, since exports are rising, the fall is down to lower domestic demand.

Pension deficits are the 'unexploded bomb in your investment portfolio', says leading financial expert
Pension deficits were for years no more than a nuisance - a necessary cost that any large corporation had to pay as a consequence of employing large numbers of staff. But ever since the EU referendum corporate bond yields - which are used to value pension liabilities shown in company accounts - have hit all time lows and placed deficits in sharp focus.
How to profit from the generation who love to spoil themselves: Millennials shun material things in favour of experiences
A fashion crisis has hit the High Street to the tune of £700million, and retailers aren't expecting younger shoppers to help reverse the trend. Unlike their baby-boomer parents who typically liked to buy houses and fill them with stuff, Generation Y are increasingly spending their cash on eating and going out.
The safest and most vulnerable current accounts revealed: TSB, Santander, Lloyds and Halifax have least robust online banking security
Which? slammed four high street banking giants for consistently scoring poorly since it started analysing security measures for current account customers four years ago. It says the best banks in its tests use two-factor authentication without it being too 'onerous for their customers' adding that there was 'no excuse for others to sacrifice security.'

One mark for each answer of the nation the note is from and the name of the currency, and another if you guess correctly whether the pound has risen or fallen against it since June 23 (answers at the end of the article).

Should savings interest become completely tax-free? asks SIMON LAMBERT
It is just seven months since a major cut was delivered, with interest below £1,000 made tax-free, but the benefit of that has swiftly evaporated. That move lifted many people out of tax for savings but there are still a sizeable number relying on bigger pots for income. So is it time to make savings interest tax-free - and why do we even tax it in the first place?
