Kathy Bates murders herself while portraying dual roles as bloodbath continues on American Horror Story

Kathy Bates was involved in another series of gruesome bloodbaths on Wednesday on American Horror Story: Roanoke.

In a vile twist the Oscar-winner managed to murder herself, by stabbing one of the characters she plays in the face with a wooden stake.

Bates, who plays both The Butcher and Agnes Mary Winstead (the schizophrenic actress who re-enacts The Butcher), went on a homicidal spree.

Meta murder: Kathy Bates murdered herself, sort of, on Wednesday's episode of American Horror Story

This culminated in the real Butcher killing Agnes.

The show opened at the North Carolina production office of Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell, with the producer Sidney (Cheyenne Jackson) refusing to search for his co-producer Diana (who was murdered in the last episode by a pig man).

'I'm not wasting my energy on someone who doesn't want to be part of history,' he announced.

Some suspicious activity occurred on the CCTV cameras and they heard a blood curdling scream.

Splitting headache: The Butcher buried her blade deep into Agnes

Their assistant Melissa was outside, bleeding profusely from the neck. The Butcher then appeared, stabbing Sidney and his camera man and removing their guts.

'I am the tree and the lightning that strikes it,' growled The Butcher.

Back at the haunted house English Audrey Tindell (Sarah Paulson) was searching for her flame-haired toy boy Rory (Evan Peters).

They discovered a pool of blood that 'didn't smell like corn syrup' but Audrey wouldn't believe it was real.

'Oh my God, Brad Pitt! Rory got a better offer, he's left us to go back to L.A. for a movie, Sidney put him up to this to give us a good scare for the camera,' she said naively.

Meanwhile a crazed and blood-splattered Agnes was having a meltdown in the basement.

Losing it: Agnes was losing her mind down in the basement

'It was my destiny, they chose me, I was the fan favourite,' she hissed.

She then lit a fire to discover lots of Blair Witch-style twigs hanging all around her.

Shelby (Lily Rabe) and her former lover Dominic (Cuba Gooding Jr.) were arguing, but Matt (Andre Holland) overheard and intervened.

Freaking out: The actress discovered ominous wood signs around her

'You want her, you can have her, f*** her right here for all I care,' he said, slapping the table next to them.

In a side confessional Dominic revealed that he was wired up to be 'the bad guy'.

His M.O. was to collect ratings by secretly recording extra footage with his own personal cameras.

Shelby was sobbing in the bedroom when Agnes The Butcher entered with a meat cleaver.

'No one cares about me anymore,' she yelled, before violently hacking at Shelby's shoulder.

Dominic steamed in to save her and Agnes vanished.

Tense talk: Dominic and Shelby were arguing and were overheard by Matt

Boozy cop Lee (Adina Porter) announced that the phone lines had been cut and no assistance was sent.

Lee, Audrey and Monet (Angela Bassett) then tried to escape the house to fetch help.

In the underground passage they were confronted by a ghoulish version of Rory (the home's 16th-century builder, Edward Mott) who Lee shot four times.

Escape route: Monet joined Lee and Audrey in an attempt to escape the house

'What was that thing?' they asked as they fled to the woods with the 'Blood Moon' looming ominously overhead.

At the production office they found the corpses of Sidney and his crew.

'I'm not American, I'm not used to all this carnage,' howled Audrey.

Brutal killing: Diana was found dead outside the production office

Agnes came running out of the undergrowth and Lee managed to shoot her, but their troubles amplified when a posse of hillbillies came at them.

Audrey was making a fraught video message for Rory when blood started dripping down her face.

They looked up to see a corpse hanging from the trees overhead.

The Butcher (Agnes) then pulled the bullets out of her shoulder with pliers to prepare for another round of insanity.

'This house and everything in it will be consumed by fire. Only the ashes will remain at the end of this night,' she bellowed.

Matt, who had been lying with injured Shelby arose in the night for another terrifying sexual encounter with the Scathach, aka the Witch of the Woods, (Lady Gaga).

Bullet removal: Agnes pulled bullets out of her own shoulder

Shelby attacked the Scathach but Matt was angered by the intervention.

'I'm in love with her Shelby, she's the reason I came back,' he said.

Shelby was so jealous she bludgeoned him to a pulp with a crow bar.

'I came back for him,' she sobbed.

Brutal beating: Shelby got jealous and bludgeoned Matt to death

Dominic advised her to turn herself in.

'Best thing for you to do is confess and go quietly,' he told her.

Out in the woods Lee, Audrey and Monet were captured by the cannibalistic hillbillies of the Polk family (Frances Conroy and Chaz Bono)

Proper seasoning: The drug growing cannibals seasoned up Lee first

Lee was chopped up first and they made the other two taste her raw flesh.

The ghostly 'Lost Colony of Roanoke' then appeared and Agnes was murdered by the real Butcher – who drove a wooden stake into her face.

'You're my idol…I'm so sorry, I just wanted to be on TV,' whimpered Agnes before she was impaled.

AHS, which was recently renewed for a seventh season, returns next week on FX.
