Lisbon Airport was forced to close for several hours after a passenger plane made a hard landing that 'crushed' its landing gear and left debris scattered across the runway. Photographs from the scene showed the front landing gear touching the tarmac (main) with the wheels missing (inset). The incident, on October 22, reportedly saw the TAP operated aircraft bouncing twice on the runway before finally coming to a stop. There were 20 passengers and four crew on board at the time and all were said to have disembarked the flight without injury.

19th century London Necropolis Railway train built to transport 2,000 corpses a year

Every day, from the late 1880s to the early 1900s, the London Necropolis Railway (right) ferried corpses from a purpose-built station near Waterloo (left) directly to the Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey (inset, pictured today). It was developed in 1854 in response to both a recent cholera epidemic and chronic overcrowding in London cemeteries at the time, and the service was designed to transport not just the dead, but their relatives and funeral-goers too.
