Elle Fanning, 18, holds her own with four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening in 20th Century Women trailer

Elle Fanning bantered with Annette Bening in a new trailer for 20th Century Women released on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old actress and four-time Oscar nominee Bening were shown in the trailer having a deep kitchen conversation.

Bening, 58, portrays single mom Dorothea Fields in the upcoming comedy drama based in Santa Barbara, California in 1979 while Elle plays provocative boarder Julie.

'How do you be a good man?,' asked Dorothea while young photographer Abbie, played by Greta Gerwig, listened on.

'Don't you need a man to raise a man?,' Julie replied.

'No, I don't think so. I think you're what's going to work for him,' Dorothea said with a nod to Julie and Abbie.

Dorothea's teenage son Jamie, played by Lucas Jade Zumann, was shown having a candid talk with his mother and also out with Julie and Abbie.

Billy Crudup plays the adult male lead William and he was shown fixing up a VW Bug.

William also dished out advice to Jamie during a large dinner party.

'Jamie, I also want to say, never have sex with just the vagina. You have to have sex with the whole woman,' William told the boy.

'That's slightly off topic,' Abbie interjected from the middle of the table.

The trailer featured appropriate music from the era including The Big Country by Talking Heads and Why Can't I Touch It? by the English rock band Buzzcocks.

20th Century Women is scheduled for limited release in the US on December 25.
