Centimetres from death! Shocking video shows huge crocodile leap out of a river and take a snap at a tour guide leaning over edge of a boat

  • Saltwater crocodile jumped up out of a lake and tried to bite a tour guide
  • He pulled back at the last minute, just avoiding the croc's snapping jaws
  • Tourists on the boat screamed but the guide remained calm, laughing it off

A tour guide almost lost his arm to a crocodile after it leaped out of a lake and snapped at him as he leaned over the side of a boat.

The tour operator, who was taking a group of people around a lake known for its 'jumping crocodiles', was pointing across the water when the huge beast went for his arm.

A shocking video, shot on the Adelaide River in the Northern Territory, shows the mammoth reptile leaping up and trying to bite off the guide's arm.

He pulls away at the last minute, with the croc's jaws missing by mere centimetres.

'Just remember, no arms out the side,' the tour guide said seconds after the close call.

The tourists - who had moments earlier screamed with shock - are heard laughing nervously.

It is not clear who the tour guide is, but the incident happened in 2013.

Croc expert Grahame Webb told NT News that he was unaware of any accidents on the tours, which have been going on for the last 40 years.

'That doesn't mean there couldn't be an accident but it means people can manage it because they've been doing it for years,' he explained.

'It's hard to say the tours are high risk when the operators' safety is well and truly demonstrated over time.

'I don't know what could go wrong, it's the same as standing out on a footpath and waiting to see what happens.

'More people get hurt playing football.' Mr Webb said.
