Mel Gibson appears to morph into Santa Claus as Christmas approaches... and the Hacksaw Ridge director REFUSES to trim his beard

With Christmas just around the corner, it's easy to sort the elves from the grinches.

And one celebrity appearing to get into the holiday spirit early is Mel Gibson, 60.

The Hollywood actor's ever-growing beard is beginning to look more and more like the facial hair of Father Christmas.

Ho ho ho! Mel Gibson gives off a Father Christmas vibe as he poses for cameras with his arms outstretched and his bushy beard appearing to turn a vibrant white

The grey and white mass increases in width and length at each promotional stop for his new movie Hacksaw Ridge.

Some have noted its growth appears to be almost in direct competition with the film's female lead, Teresa Palmer's ever-growing baby bump.

At a number of media events, the director is seen stroking his facial hair as he responds to questions, gaining wisdom from the large bush that adorns his face.

Trying to impress the grandkids? The 60-year-old's new look comes just in time for Christmas, where he will be able to play Santa for his six-year-old daughter and his three grandchildren

Inspiration? Mel bears a striking resemblance to Father Christmas

Though many have questioned the unprecedented growth, Mel has taken the jibes in his stride.

Last week, the Hollywood veteran joked to USA Today that his beard had practical uses as well.

'At the end of a long week of living - eating, drinking - you can wring it out and make soup,' he exclaimed.

Looking for answers? The Hacksaw Ridge director is often seen stroking his impressive facial growth during media interviews

'The leftovers are amazing!'

Mel's new Santa-esque look will likely be wasted on his unborn ninth child to new girlfriend Rosalind Ross, who is not expected to give birth until after the 2016 holiday season.

But he may be able to impress his six-year-old daughter Lucia, child of ex-wife Oksana Grigorieva.

The Braveheart star also has three grandchildren under six who will undoubtedly be delighted by their grandfather's new seasonal look.

Cleaner-shaven times: While the Braveheart star is rarely clean shaven as above, his facial hair is rarely left untrimmed as it is now
