That’s why they call it Ladies Day! Plunging necklines and barely-there mini-skirts are the short-priced favourites at Flemington as thousands soak up the sunshine at Oaks Day

  • Punters enjoyed the sunshine and a refreshment as they prepared for the main race
  • Thousands of well-dressed spectators vied for the perfect position among an expected 60,000 guests

  • As the day wore on, the sun and refreshments began to take their toll on racegoers
  • Some spilled drinks on themselves or put on amorous displays, while others took a tumble into rose bushes
  • Two punters were arrested for drunkenness and six others were evicted from the event

Oaks Day has always been called 'Ladies Day' and the women who flocked to Flemington certainly made the most of their star billing on Thursday.

With Melbourne basking in glorious 21 degree spring temperatures, the women were not afraid to show plenty of skin while they enjoyed a cool drink and watched the horses go round.

But some punters went a little two hard with two arrested for drunkenness and six evicted from the event, according the Victorian police.

One woman in a flattering blue dress even enjoyed some fairy floss in place of a more traditional afternoon tea.

The long day leading up to the feature 'Crown Oaks' race became too much for some women, who were paused to rest on the grass, grab a burger, or even get in a cheeky cigarette.

A group of women grabbed a funny selfie with each other as they relished their down time, while some couples enjoyed a not-so-sneaky kiss.

Another group of men practised their dance moves while some women sat to the side and took a minute to take off their heels and relax.

Not long after the gates opened, last year's Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne won on horse Tavi Bay in the Red Rock Deli Plate race.

The jockey wore a smile from ear to ear after her win as she gave a thumbs up to the spectators.

Ms Payne did not ride Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance to victory for a second year after she revealed a disagreement with the prized horse's owners in August.
