Cheesy: Michael Douglas has revealed that he almost put an end to his relationship with Catherine Zeta Jones before it'd begun, as he scared her off with a cringe-worthy chat up line

Setting the scenes of their first meeting at the Deauville Film Festival, he explained that after asking his publicist to set up a meeting, he greeted the star at a bar.

After just a few minutes of chatting, Michael surprised Catherine by coming out with: 'You know, I'm going to be the father of your children,' which he claimed 'sounded good'.

But his comments were somewhat ill-advised as he revealed she said 'I've heard a lot about you and I've seen a lot about you and I think it's time that I said goodnight.''

Not such a smooth talker: Speaking on the Jonathan Ross Show, the 72-year-old Oscar winner confessed that his chat up line left a lot to be desired

Loved-up: Michael wed Catherine in 2000, and the pair have two children together, despite a brief separation in 2013, the couple have remained happily married

Dismayed, he recalled: 'So I thought 'I've totally blew it.' She was gone early the next morning and she went to [Scotland]. I thought it's all gone I've just destroyed it.'

But luckily, he was able to win the star round as he explained he sought out some roses to send to her along with a touching apology note.

Michael also has a 37-year-old son, Cameron, with his first wife Diandra Luker, who was jailed for seven and half years on drug charges.

Cameron Douglas was sentenced to five years in prison in New York in 2010 for possession of heroin and conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine. His sentence was extended after he admitted smuggling drugs into prison.

Discussing his son's addiction and struggle with Class A drugs, he admitted: 'It's certainly gone through all of us the pain and anxiety of this.

'It doesn't seem to be working in terms of our penal system throwing in non violent, I must emphasise that, non violent drug offenders with serious violent prisoners is just not working so… I think the legalisation of marijuana is well on it's way.'

He continued: 'We have a tremendous amount of work to do in our country - without getting into the local politics - in terms of our infrastructure and one of the other issues is our health, our mental health.

'I think that the money that will eventually be made with taxing everything from the marijuana sales and drug policies will help programmes of rehabilitation. '

The star also revealed that his fellow actor and friend Val Kilmer is battling oral cancer, appearing to confirm rumours that 56-year-old Kilmer had been ill.

Douglas, who beat stage 4 oral cancer in 2013, was speaking to Jonathan Ross about filming 1996's The Ghost and the Darkness with Kilmer.

'The picture didn't turn out as well as I hoped but I had a wonderful time,' he said.

'Val was a wonderful guy who is dealing with exactly what I had, and things don't look too good for him.

'My prayers are with him. That’s why you haven’t heard too much from Val lately.'

However, in a lengthy Facebook update posted on Tuesday Kilmer denied he had cancer.

The actor graciously let his friend off the hook saying that last time he spoke to Douglas was two years ago when he was initially seeking a medical referral for a mysterious lump in his throat.

'I have no cancer whatsoever,' he wrote. 'ISpeaking on the Jonathan Ross Showstill have a swollen tongue and am rehabbing steadily.

'I've made 3 films in the last year, one of which I directed and am presenting as a personal appearance introducing it and then answering questions after.

'Come see me live and happy and in person in Westwood next week if you think I'm fibbing!!'
